Edo-Tokyo Museum: What to Know Before You Go (Including the English Audio Guide!)

If you ever find yourself in Tokyo with a free afternoon and a curiosity for history, the Edo-Tokyo Museum is absolutely worth your time.

Our friend Akemi took us here and honestly we would never have found it on our own — which is exactly why we’re telling you about it.

Here Adam is pulling me on a tuktuk

The museum is dedicated to the history of Edo, which is what Tokyo was called before 1869. Think detailed scale models of old houses, ancient city layouts, traditional artwork and a fascinating look at how this incredible city came to be.

Our biggest tip — and we cannot stress this enough — rent the audio headset.

Very little of the museum is in English, which felt surprising for an international history museum. But for 1,000 yen (about $10) you can rent a headset that explains everything in English. You get your money back when you return it so it is essentially free. Do not skip this — it completely transforms the experience.

One of our favorite displays showed the traditional process of making artwork using stamps. Each tiny detail was created with a different stamp and ink and watching the progression of a piece come together was genuinely beautiful.

Adam may or may not have pulled Nicole around on a tuk tuk. We’ll leave it at that. 😄

The basics:

  • Entrance fee: 600 yen
  • Audio guide: 1,000 yen (refundable deposit)
  • Go with a local if you can — Akemi made all the difference!
