Happy Birthday Brycekies

1
I know this isn’t about Korea…but we also spend plenty of time thinking about our family back home. Skype makes things so nice and easy to get in touch with people that it makes the “missing” part not so bad. Certain holidays and occasions make it harder than others.

Thursday my nephew is turning 5, he is waving at me in the picture. I remember the day he was born, I was out to happy hour with people from work at Ale House and my friend Kate Tate and I waited at the hospital until he was born. I was able to see him pretty much right away…and just like that, I became an Auntie. I remember all of his birthdays and now, I will not be able to be at this one… I shipped presents home and won’t be able to share his cake.

But, my Brycekies…I love you. (here are some of my favorite photos of him.)

What are the most important things you learn as a parent?

That you will not do it perfectly and that is not the goal. That kids remember how they felt more than what they were given. That the hard seasons pass. And that showing up consistently matters more than any individual parenting decision you agonize over.

How do you balance parenting with everything else in life?

Imperfectly and continuously. The balance shifts rather than stays fixed. Some seasons are work-heavy, some are kid-heavy. The goal is not equal distribution but intentionality about where attention goes and honesty about when the current distribution is not working.

What advice would you give to parents considering a major life change?

Talk to your kids honestly and earlier than feels comfortable. They handle truth better than they handle sensing that something is happening but not knowing what. Ask for their input even on decisions that are ultimately yours.

How do kids adapt to big changes?

Better than most parents expect, especially when the adults around them are honest and stable. Kids take emotional cues from their parents. If the adults are anxious and secretive, kids become anxious. If the adults are clear and calm, kids adjust.

What do you wish you had known before having kids?

That each child is entirely different and what worked for one will not reliably work for another. That the early years are harder and faster than anyone tells you. That the goal of parenting is to gradually work yourself out of a job.

  1. Bryce's birthday party was good. Bounce house, "spongebob" pinata, and plenty of food. Brandon was the star performer on the pinata in that no one could break it!! Everyone who knows you asked for you. Sandi spent most of the time running after Brayden. Lots of gifts. Overcast day, made for perfect temperatures. Bryce was a "perfect" birthday boy.Again, thank G-d for Skype. We love you. Love, Dad.
