32 Weeks Pregnant Update — Hospital Visit Chiropractic Care and Baby Hiccups on the Monitor

Eight weeks left and Gavin is already keeping us on our toes — hiccups on the heart monitor, a late night hospital visit and a 4D sonogram that confirmed he is very much a boy. I can not believe it, but we have only 8 weeks or so to go until Gavin’s arrival. I haven’t done an update since 27, man time flies. A lot has happened these last few weeks…as well as a lot of belly growth. How far along| 32 weeks Baby’s Size| According to Babycenter.com you should be an average of 3 3/4 lbs and 16 13/4 inches long. This week they compare you to a jicama. PS. I had no idea what that was…check it out. At the Midwife’s office, they have these really cool beanbags which depict the average size and weight of your baby as it develops. Here is your Adam holding the beanbag for 32 weeks. 20130218_164127 Weight Gain| HAHAHA, we have busted 150 lbs! That means we are up 28 lbs! Sleep| I’m sleeping way better thanks to Dr. Rivera** No, he didn’t prescribe me drugs. He is a chiropractor. Since stopping yoga in Korea back at week 8, I haven’t had the best hips or support from my bones and ligaments. I go twice a week to Dr Rivera, who is not only super nice with a great staff, but pretty nice to look at too. Clothes| Comfy is the best policy Cravings| Nothing strange..still. I guess Gavin isn’t going to be a picky eater Food MUSTS| Not a craving, but an absolute must…a ton of water. Friday I had a crazy headache coming on that blurred my vision and made my arm numb, it was nuts…reminded me of a migrane I had about 2 years ago. I called my Dr. and she said I should go to Winnie. For those of you unfamiliar, Winnie Palmer is a hospital here in Orlando for Women and Babies. So, Adam and I went to Winnie. They hooked Gavin up to a heart monitor where we heard him get the hiccups (it was pretty fun to hear). Then, they gave me some meds and I slept it off until my fluids were better and my headache gone. So, I am now instructed to drink my very special Winnie 32 ozWater Bottle, 5 times a day.  20130222_194200 Movement| You are really a blast to feel move. You are a total soccer player or some athlete in the making! Belly Button| Still in, although the top half is sticking out. Baby’s Sex| He is still a boy, we had a 4D sonogram a few weeks ago and it definitely confirmed his nice size….private parts. The technician must have pointed it out 10 times. Here is  picture of his face. It is a bit blurry because he wouldn’t stop moving and he has been flipped forever. His head is so far down there that there isn’t a lot of fluid between him and the outer part of my uterus. So, the sonogram machine didn’t have a lot of fluid to have the image clearer, but you can definitely detect a lot handsomeness in there! We were also told he didn’t have much hair at the time. collage 65972_10151454014669082_641918945_nHighlight of the Week (s)| We have started Birthing Class…and love it. You can read more about it here, we had our maternity shoot and you can see pictures here, and most awesomely… Gavin’s Uncle Shawn got married this weekend to his long time love of 8 years, Tiffany. It was a beautiful fairytale wedding and we rocked out all night. You have to understand that even not pregnant I am usually the first to crash and head to bed, but this preggo lady in heels lasted until 2 am, partying with the best of them…with a little less dancing, a lot less drinking…and a stop for a Whopper around 11:30 pm. We spent a lot of time with family and celebrated love.      318263_10151534575360452_1831884502_n What’s to come| This weekend is our baby shower and next week we move into our own apartment!

Q: What happens at 32 weeks pregnant? A: At 32 weeks your baby weighs roughly 3 and three quarter pounds and measures about 16 and three quarter inches — about the size of a jicama according to BabyCenter which sent us straight to Google. Major development is complete and the final weeks are primarily about growth and positioning. Movement is strong and frequent and you will feel every hiccup every stretch and every kick with remarkable clarity.

Q: Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy? A: Yes and for us it was genuinely life changing in the third trimester. After stopping yoga at week eight we had significant hip pain and ligament discomfort that chiropractic care twice a week completely resolved. If you are experiencing back hip or pelvic pain during pregnancy we strongly recommend finding a prenatal chiropractor — the difference in sleep quality and daily comfort was immediate and significant.

Q: What causes pregnancy headaches and vision changes? A: At 32 weeks a severe headache with blurred vision and arm numbness sent us to Winnie Palmer Hospital in Orlando where we were monitored and treated for dehydration and low fluid levels. The remedy was straightforward — dramatically increasing water intake to 160 ounces daily. Staying properly hydrated in the third trimester is genuinely critical and easy to underestimate when you are busy and tired.

Q: What is a 4D sonogram like during pregnancy? A: One of the most remarkable experiences of the whole pregnancy. The 4D sonogram gives you a detailed three dimensional view of your baby’s face in real time — we could see Gavin’s features clearly even though he would not stop moving long enough for a sharp image. The technician confirmed his sex approximately ten enthusiastic times which we felt was thorough.

Q: What should you pack for a third trimester hospital visit? A: Even for a monitoring visit bring your insurance information a phone charger snacks and your birth plan documents if you have them started. The visit itself was straightforward — heart monitoring fluid checks and medication — but having everything organized made an already stressful evening much calmer. Consider this a useful dry run for the real thing in eight weeks.

What are the most important things you learn as a parent?

That you will not do it perfectly and that is not the goal. That kids remember how they felt more than what they were given. That the hard seasons pass. And that showing up consistently matters more than any individual parenting decision you will ever agonize over.

How do you balance parenting with everything else in life?

Imperfectly and continuously. The balance shifts rather than stays fixed. Some seasons are work-heavy, some are kid-heavy, some are partnership-heavy. The goal is not equal distribution but intentionality about where attention goes and honesty about when the current distribution is not working.

What advice would you give to parents considering a major life change?

Talk to your kids honestly and earlier than feels comfortable. They handle truth better than they handle sensing that something is happening but not knowing what. And ask for their input even on decisions that are ultimately yours because being heard matters even when the outcome is not what they wanted.

How do kids adapt to big changes?

Better than most parents expect, especially when the adults around them are honest and stable. Kids take emotional cues from their parents. If the adults are anxious and secretive, kids become anxious. If the adults are clear and calm, kids adjust. The hardest changes are the ones parents are not settled about themselves.

What do you wish you had known before having kids?

That each child is entirely different and what worked for one will not reliably work for another. That the early years are harder and faster than anyone tells you. That the goal of parenting is to gradually work yourself out of a job. And that being present is more rare and more valuable than being perfect.

  1. Oh, how very exciting for your family. I love to see all you pictures, and what an adventurous life you have led so far. A child will only bless it beyond it a million times over. Do you plan to do lots of traveling with the baby now that it has arrived? Many blessings sent your way.
