They carry fewer people

Tauck reconfigures its ships to carry fewer passengers than the equivalent vessel on another line. Same hull, fewer cabins, more space each.

What that buys you is a lounge with enough seating, a dining room that is not full, a gangway without a queue, and excursion groups that are small enough to hear the guide. On a river ship, where everybody does everything at the same time, this is the difference between a pleasant day and a herded one.

It also means the ships sell out. Tauck is not a last-minute purchase.

Everything is included, genuinely

All meals, all drinks including spirits, all gratuities for crew and guides and drivers, all excursions, wi-fi, and airport transfers. There is nothing to sign for.

Tauck also includes things other lines charge as premium add-ons, such as private after-hours access to sites and evening events that are not available to the general public.

I have had clients get off a Tauck cruise genuinely unsure whether they had paid for anything, which is the intended effect. When you compare, you must add tips, drinks and every excursion to the cheaper quote or the comparison is meaningless.

Bridges, and why I recommend it so often

Tauck Bridges is the family programme and it is the best in the river business alongside Uniworld Generations. Not a family-friendly version of an adult trip. A trip designed for families from the beginning.

That means excursions built for children, guides who know how to talk to a nine year old, activities in the afternoons, and other families on board. The critical mass point again. Your children have friends by dinner on the first night.

The itineraries are chosen for the same reason. Castles you can climb, salt mines, bike rides, cooking, a lot of getting off the ship and doing something rather than looking at something.

Bridges departures are limited and go early. For a specific summer, book a year ahead. Every year I have clients who wait and then cannot get on.

The guides are the actual product

Tauck calls them Directors and they travel with you throughout, rather than a different local guide appearing in each port.

The difference this makes is enormous, particularly with children. By day three they know your kids, they know what interests them, and they steer the week accordingly. They also handle every logistical problem before you know there was one.

This is the thing Tauck clients talk about afterwards. Not the ship, not the food. The person who ran the trip.

The ships and cabins

Comfortable, well maintained, understated. Not as decorated as Uniworld, not as gadget-laden as Scenic. The aesthetic is quietly expensive rather than showy.

Cabins are good sized for the category with proper bathrooms. Because the ships carry fewer people, there are more of the better cabins proportionally.

Family cabin configurations exist on Bridges departures specifically, which is not true across the river industry generally. Ask about this early.

What I would watch out for

It is expensive at the headline and it is not always cheaper once you have done the comparison, though it is often closer than people expect. Sometimes the answer really is that it costs more.

Outside Bridges, the passenger profile is older and American. A family on a standard sailing will be conspicuous.

And the pace on the touring side is full. Tauck gives you a lot and some people find they want a day off. Take one.
