Scenic
butler service, on a river, which is as odd as it sounds
Scenic is an Australian company that decided river ships should be run like small luxury hotels, and then went further than anybody expected. Every cabin gets a butler. The fare includes essentially everything, including the excursions and the tips. There are electric bikes on board and a private car in some ports. It is a lot, and the fare is a lot, and the two are more closely related than the sticker shock suggests.
What is included, which is nearly everything
All meals across all venues. All drinks, all day, including spirits and decent wine. All gratuities, on board and ashore. All excursions, with choices in most ports rather than a single option. Wi-fi. Airport transfers.
This is the top of the river inclusion table alongside Tauck and Uniworld. There is very little you can spend money on once you are on board, which is either liberating or unnerving depending on your temperament.
The excursion inclusion is the one that matters most financially. On a two week Danube itinerary with a family, included touring in every port is a large number that never appears on your credit card.
The butler, and what it actually does
Every suite has one, not just the top grades. In practice they handle your laundry, your bookings, your requests, and bring things to your room.
On a river ship this is less transformative than at sea, because you are off the ship most of the day. But the pressed shirts and the breakfast on your balcony are real, and with children the laundry service alone changes what you have to pack.
It also means somebody in the crew is specifically yours, which on a busy ship with a lot of retired passengers who all want something is worth having.
The Sun Lounge, which is a better idea than it sounds

Scenic cabins have a glass wall that lowers at the touch of a button, turning the end of the room into an open balcony. They call it a Sun Lounge and it is the same idea as Avalon’s open-air balcony, executed slightly differently.
Why it matters on a river is simple. The weather in Europe is unreliable and a conventional outdoor balcony is unusable half the time. A room that converts is usable in every condition.
Combined with the fact that river scenery is continuous rather than occasional, this is the single feature I would prioritize when choosing a river cabin, on any line that offers a version of it.
E-bikes and the active side
Scenic carries electric bikes and the cycling excursions are properly organized, with guides and routes that suit mixed abilities.
This is the thing that makes Scenic viable for families with teenagers. A fifteen year old who has been dragged around three cathedrals will forgive you a great deal if the fourth day involves riding an e-bike along the Danube.
There are also walking and hiking options in most ports, graded by difficulty. The active programming is meaningfully better than the river average.
Children on board
No kids club and generally few children. The standard river caveat applies with full force here, because the passenger profile skews older and Australian.
It works for older children, particularly active ones, because of the bikes and the excursion choice. It does not work for young children.
If your family is the right shape for it, the all-inclusive structure is a real advantage. Teenagers order things. Endlessly. Not having that on a bill at the end of the week is worth something.
What I would watch out for
The price is high and the comparison requires effort. Do it properly and include excursions and tips on the cheaper alternative before you decide.
The atmosphere is quiet and adult, and the entertainment is limited. This is a ship for people who want to be off it.
And as with every river line, water levels can disrupt an itinerary. Ask about the operator’s policy in that event before you book, not after.
Scenic and Tauck and Uniworld all claim to include everything, and the differences between them are real but small. Tell me your dates and your family and I will tell you which of the three actually fits you best.
Questions people actually ask
The ones that come up before anyone books. If yours isn’t here, ask me.
What is included on a Scenic river cruise?
All meals, all drinks including spirits, all gratuities on board and ashore, all shore excursions with choices in most ports, wi-fi and airport transfers. It is among the most inclusive river fares available.
Does every Scenic cabin have a butler?
Yes. Butler service is provided across all suite grades rather than being limited to top categories.
What is a Scenic Sun Lounge?
A cabin feature where a glass wall lowers electronically to convert the end of the room into an open-air balcony, allowing the space to be used in a range of weather conditions.
Does Scenic have bikes on board?
Yes. Electric bicycles are carried and guided cycling excursions are offered, alongside graded walking and hiking options, making the active program stronger than the river average.
Is Scenic suitable for children?
It suits older, active children and teenagers. There is no kids club and most passengers are older adults, but the cycling and active excursions and the all-inclusive fare work well for teenage travelers.
Everything here is subject to change. Cruise lines rewrite their inclusions, kids club ages, ship deployments and fare structures constantly, and what is true this season may not be true next. Before you book anything, talk to me and I will confirm the current details for your specific ship and sailing date.

That is usually enough to know if this is a ship, a train, or a car with the windows down.
Travelling with children
Not every river line takes kids
Viking is adults only, eighteen and over. AmaWaterways usually takes children from four and runs family departures in summer. Riverside has no age limit at all. The full side by side, plus which river suits which age, is here.
