Ljubljana With Kids
A capital with no cars in the middle, four bronze dragons guarding a bridge, a castle you reach by funicular and a river with boats and cafes along both banks. Ljubljana is small enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes, and Lake Bled, the caves and the mountains are all under an hour away. It is one of the easiest capitals in Europe with a stroller.

Is Ljubljana good for kids?
Yes. A car free center, dragons on a bridge, a castle with a funicular, river boats, a huge park with a zoo and a science center, and free electric carts when the legs give out. It is small, flat and about as easy as a capital gets.
How many days do you need in Ljubljana?
Three nights for the city and Lake Bled. Four if you add Postojna cave and Predjama castle.
How do you get from Ljubljana to Lake Bled?
By car in 45 minutes, or by the hourly shuttle bus from the station in about an hour. The train takes longer and stops outside the town, so use the bus or drive.
Is Ljubljana walkable with a stroller?
Yes. The whole center is closed to cars and mostly flat, the bridges have gentle ramps and the funicular takes strollers. The castle hill and the old town lanes are the only cobbles.
When is the best time to visit Ljubljana?
May to September for the lakes and mountains, with June and September the easiest. December for the lights along the river. Winter is cold and the castle is pretty in snow.
The Capital With No Cars In It
Ljubljana closed its center to cars in 2007 and it changed everything. The streets along the river became cafes, the bridges became places to stand, and kids can run from the market to the Triple Bridge without anyone grabbing a hand. The architect Jože Plečnik designed most of what you look at, the bridges, the market colonnade, the river banks, in the 1930s, and the castle on the hill above watches all of it.
Three nights covers the castle, the river, the market, Tivoli park and one day at Lake Bled, all without a car. It is also the base I use for Postojna cave and the Julian Alps.
Getting Around
On foot, because the center is closed to cars and tiny. Free electric Kavalir carts carry tired legs and strollers around the old town, you just wave one down. The funicular goes up to the castle in a minute. Buses and the Bled shuttle leave from the station, 10 minutes from the river. A car is for the Alps.
Neighborhoods worth basing in
The old town, under the castle
The cobbled streets between the river and the castle hill, car free, with the market, the cathedral and the funicular at the door. Small hotels and apartments in old houses, and the river cafes at the bottom of the stairs. The base for a first visit.
The center, across the Triple Bridge
Prešeren Square, the pink church, the big hotels and the shopping streets on the west bank, with Congress Square and the station 10 minutes away. Flat, central and still car free in the middle.
By Tivoli park
West of the center, the quiet residential streets along the edge of the big park, with playgrounds, the zoo on the hill and the museums at the park gate. Ten to 15 minutes on foot to the river. Calm and green for a longer stay.
Grand Hotel Union
The 1905 Art Nouveau hotel a minute from the Triple Bridge, with an indoor pool on the top floor that looks at the castle, big rooms and breakfast in a ballroom. The splurge in Ljubljana.
Vander Urbani Resort
Four old houses joined together on the river in the old town, with a small rooftop pool, a terrace over the water and the market and the funicular two minutes away. Small, so book early.
City Hotel Ljubljana
A modern hotel by the Dragon Bridge at the top of the old town, with rooms for families, bikes to borrow and the market five minutes on foot. Reliable value at the edge of the car free zone.
The Three I Build Every Ljubljana Trip Around
The castle and the funicular
The funicular climbs from the market to the castle courtyard in a minute, glass walled so the kids watch the roofs drop away. On top there is a tower to climb for the view over the city to the Alps, a puppet museum, a museum of Slovenian history with dressing up, and lawns and walls to run along. Walk down the forest path on the other side. The castle is free, the tower and museums are one ticket.
The river, the bridges and the dragons
Start at the Dragon Bridge, where four bronze dragons from 1901 guard the corners and every kid wants a photo on one. Walk the market colonnade along the river to the Triple Bridge, three bridges fanning out from Prešeren Square and the pink Franciscan church, then take a boat. The river tours leave from below the bridge and loop under all of them in 45 minutes. Ice cream at Cacao on the way back.
The squares, Tivoli park and the zoo
From the squares of the center, Tivoli is a 10 minute walk west, the city’s park running up into the forested hills. Playgrounds, a pond, the long Jakopič promenade with outdoor photo exhibitions, and the Ljubljana Zoo on the Rožnik hill at the far side, small, shady and good for a half day. In winter there is sledding on the slopes. Take a picnic from the market.
Family Time, Built In: Ljubljana With Kids
Ljubljana with kids is dragons on a bridge, a funicular to a castle, a boat on the river, a park with a zoo and a lake with an island an hour away. These are the pieces that work.

PARK & DOWNTIME PICK
Tivoli park is the answer to everything, from the playgrounds by the gate to the zoo on the hill, and it starts 10 minutes from the river. The river banks themselves are flat, car free and lined with cafes, so parents sit and kids roam. The House of Experiments, a hands on science center in the center, fills a rainy afternoon.

The city I use to stitch Europe together
Ljubljana sits two hours from Venice, two and a half from Vienna and Zagreb, and under an hour from the Alps, the caves and the lake, which is why it keeps showing up in the trips I plan. Families come for a night on the way somewhere and tell me afterward it was the city the kids liked best.
No cars in the middle, a castle with a funicular, dragons on a bridge, and a hotel that costs half of what the same room costs in Vienna. I plan three nights, Bled one day, Postojna cave another, and the train onward. In December the lights along the river turn the whole center into a Christmas market.
The Day Trip: Lake Bled
Forty five minutes north, Bled is an emerald lake with a church on an island in the middle and a castle on a cliff above it. Row out, or take a pletna, the flat wooden boat rowed by a standing boatman, climb the 99 steps to the church and let the kids ring the wishing bell. Walk or bike the flat 4 mile path around the lake, eat a Bled cream cake on the terrace, and if the kids have energy left, the summer toboggan at Straža and the Vintgar Gorge boardwalks are 10 minutes away. The shuttle bus from Ljubljana runs all day.
Things I Would Tell A Friend Before They Booked
How Many Days
Three nights covers the castle, the river, the park and Lake Bled. Four adds Postojna cave and Predjama castle.
The castle and the river on day one, Tivoli, the zoo and the science center on day two, Lake Bled on day three.
Add Postojna cave, with the underground train, and Predjama castle built into a cliff 10 minutes further on. Both are 50 minutes from the city.
Ljubljana for three nights, two in the Soča valley or Lake Bohinj for the mountains, then three on the Croatian coast at Rovinj or Split. Ten days with a car from Ljubljana.
