How many days do we need in San Francisco with kids?
Two days is enough to see the highlights, three lets you add Sausalito or Muir Woods without rushing. It is a good add on to a bigger California trip rather than a destination to build a full week around with young kids.
How much are Alcatraz tickets?
$47.95 for adults and youth 12 to 17, $29.15 for ages 5 to 11, and free under 5. Book as soon as you know your dates, it sells out.
Is the cable car worth it with kids?
Once, yes, purely for the experience. A single ride is $12. If you will ride more than once in a day, the $18 Cable Car Plus pass covers unlimited Muni for one adult and up to two kids and pays for itself fast.
Is San Francisco stroller friendly?
Not really. The hills are steep enough to make a stroller hard work on several routes. A baby carrier does better than wheels on the hillier streets.
What is the best day trip from San Francisco with kids?
The ferry to Sausalito, about thirty minutes each way with bridge views the whole way, paired with a stop at Muir Woods if you have a car and a Muir Woods reservation booked ahead.
Should we stay at Fisherman’s Wharf or Union Square?
Fisherman’s Wharf if this is a first trip with young kids, since the Alcatraz ferry, Pier 39 and the cable car turnaround are all a short walk away. Union Square if you are mixing in shopping or want a more central base.

Two Days Is Plenty, Three Is Better
San Francisco is not a city you build a whole trip around with young kids. It is a city you add onto a bigger California trip, and two or three good days is the right amount. San Francisco with kids works best in short, well planned bursts rather than one long stretch.
It is compact, which sounds like an advantage until you realize that compact in San Francisco means hills. Real hills, the kind that turn a stroller into a workout and make a six block walk feel like four. Plan around that instead of fighting it. Pick a neighborhood, stay close to the cable car or the bus, and do not try to walk the whole city in a day with young legs attached to you.
Who It Suits
Kids who like animals do well here, between the sea lions at Pier 39 and the penguins at the Academy of Sciences. History minded kids do well with Alcatraz. And any child who likes a good boat ride is going to remember the ferry out to the island longer than almost anything else on the trip.
Who Should Skip It
Families with a stroller and a tight schedule who want to walk everywhere. The hills make that miserable. If that is your situation, budget for cabs and cable cars rather than assuming you will walk it the way you would in a flatter city.
Getting Around
The hills are real. Plan transit into every day, not just the long ones.

Where To Stay
Fisherman’s Wharf Or Union Square, Not Both In One Trip
Fisherman’s Wharf
Touristy and priced like it, but it puts you next to the Alcatraz ferry terminal, Pier 39 and the cable car turnaround. For a first trip with young kids this is the easiest base because so much of what they want to see is a short walk away.
Union Square
More central, better for families mixing in some shopping or a show, and still an easy cable car ride to the Wharf. Rooms tend to be smaller than a typical hotel room elsewhere, which matters with a family of five.
An apartment near the Marina
Flatter walking, closer to the Golden Gate Bridge and Crissy Field, and a real kitchen. A good pick if you want mornings that do not start with a hill.
Best Value
An apartment or suite with a kitchen
San Francisco restaurant prices add up fast for five people. One kitchen breakfast a day changes the daily spend noticeably.
Easy Choice
Fisherman’s Wharf, walking distance to the ferry
Ask directly if the room sleeps five legally, since a lot of Wharf hotel rooms are built for two adults and a crib, not a family of five.
Consider This
Two connecting rooms over one suite
Same logic as any expensive city. Cheaper than a suite most of the time, and better once bedtime arrives.
What Alcatraz And The Cable Car Cost
Two things sell out and one thing changed price this year. Know all three before you land.
Alcatraz tickets go through Alcatraz City Cruises, the only operator allowed to run the ferry, and they sell out days to weeks ahead in the busy season. Book the day you pick your dates, not the week before. Adults and youth 12 to 17 run $47.95, kids 5 to 11 are $29.15, and under 5 rides free. That price includes the ferry both ways and the audio tour, which is one of the better audio tours we have used anywhere and is why I do not think Alcatraz is skippable, even at that price.
The cable car changed in January 2026. A single ride is $12 now, cash or a Muni mobile ticket, no changes given on board. For a family riding more than once in a day, the better buy is the Cable Car Plus pass at $18, which covers unlimited Muni for the day for one adult and up to two kids. Do the math for your family size before you tap a card four separate times.

Alcatraz, The Bridge, And One More: Things To Do In San Francisco With Kids
01
Alcatraz Island
Book the earliest slot you can get, because the cell house tour is the same whatever time you go and the earlier boats are calmer with kids. The audio tour is narrated partly by former guards and inmates and it holds a nine or ten year old for the full hour without anyone asking to leave. Give it a full half day once you count the ferry both ways.
02
The Golden Gate Bridge
Walk or bike partway across from the Welcome Center rather than trying to do the whole span with young kids, and go early or late for the best chance at a clear view. Fog is not a failure here. Some of the best photos we have are the bridge half swallowed by it, and it is part of what the city looks like most days.
03
Pier 39 And The Sea Lions
Free, loud, and exactly the kind of thing that makes a five year old’s whole trip. They started hauling out on the docks here in 1989 and never really left. Ten minutes is enough for most kids, then let the rest of Pier 39 be the arcade and snack stop it is built to be.
The Powell-Hyde line is the one with the view. Ride it once for the novelty, once for the hill.
For The Kids
What Holds Their Attention
San Francisco is a good city for kids who like to look at things. Animals, ships, a rock with a prison on it. Build the day around those, not around walking.
- Sea lions at Pier 39
- California Academy of Sciences penguins and rainforest dome
- The Painted Ladies at Alamo Square
- Musee Mecanique’s old arcade machines
- Chinatown’s Dragon Gate and alleyways
- A cable car ride, just for the ride itself
Downtime Pick
Alamo Square, mid afternoon. The Painted Ladies backdrop is free and the park itself has room to run after a morning of hills and lines. Bring a snack and let everyone sit down for twenty minutes before the next thing.
Free, five minutes, and the photo everyone already knows before they arrive.
What To Eat
Sourdough, Crab, And A Walk Through Chinatown
Clam chowder bread bowl
Dungeness crab
Ghirardelli sundae
The clam chowder bread bowl at the Wharf is the thing every kid wants to try and about half of them finish it, the bread bowl alone is a meal. Dungeness crab is in season roughly November through June and the fish markets along Jefferson Street will crack one for you on the spot if you ask. And a Ghirardelli sundae at the original Square is a genuine stop, not just a gift shop, with a soda fountain that has been there since the chocolate factory itself moved out.
Nicole’s Perspective
From Nicole
This is one we know well
Adam and I drove the 49 mile scenic loop through San Francisco back in January of 2012, straight out of a DK guidebook, before Gavin, before Jake, before Avilene. We have been back more times than I could count exactly since then, some just the two of us passing through, some with all three kids and Poppy loaded into the car.
My best friend lives in Sebastopol, about an hour north, so a trip through San Francisco usually turns into a few extra days with her too. That is a big part of why I know this city as well as I do. It is not something I researched for clients. It is a place we keep ending up.
If you want me to build the San Francisco piece of a bigger California trip around your dates and your kids’ ages, that is what I do.
Day Trip
Sausalito, Muir Woods, Or A Night In Napa
A ferry ride and a forest, no rental car required
Take the ferry across the bay to Sausalito, about thirty minutes each way with a view of the bridge and the city skyline that kids like better than most museums. Walk the waterfront, get ice cream, and if you have a car or want to add a short cab ride, continue on to Muir Woods to walk among the redwoods. Book the Muir Woods parking or shuttle reservation ahead, it is required and it does sell out on weekends.
Napa is the other direction, about an hour out, and if you have a spare day I would make it an overnight rather than a rush there and back. Adam and I have stayed a night in Napa more than once, and even with the kids along now, a slow lunch and a walk through downtown Napa or Yountville is worth the drive. It suits older kids and teenagers far better than toddlers.
Sonoma and Sebastopol are the pick when we are visiting my best friend, who lives up that way. It is a slower kind of day, more farm stands and back roads than wine tasting when the kids are along, and it is an hour out either way.
SPLURGEThe Alcatraz Night Tour, And A Sail On The Bay
Where The Money Is Worth Spending
San Francisco is an expensive city already, so I would only splurge on things you cannot get any other way.
The Alcatraz Night Tour is the first. Smaller groups, the boat ride at dusk, and the city lighting up across the water on the way back. It sells out weeks ahead, so book it the day your dates are set.
The second is a sail on the bay. A couple of hours on a sailboat under the Golden Gate is a very different city than the one you see from the bridge.
What I would not pay for. Individual cable car tickets every time you ride. A Muni Visitor Passport covers cable cars, buses and streetcars, and it pays for itself fast.
Practical
Things I Would Tell A Friend Before They Booked
Book Alcatraz the day you pick your dates. It sells out days to weeks ahead in the busy season, and there is no way around the official ferry operator.
Bring layers, every single day. Mark Twain never said the cold summer line about San Francisco, but whoever did say it first was right. Fog rolls in fast even in July.
The hills are not an exaggeration. A stroller on some of these streets is hard work. Budget for cabs or the cable car rather than assuming you will walk everywhere.
One ride on a cable car is enough for most families. After that the bus and a rideshare are faster and cheaper. Ride it for the experience, not as your main transit plan.
Two to three days is the right length. This is a city to add onto a bigger California trip, not to build a full week around with young kids.
Muir Woods needs a reservation. Parking and the shuttle both require booking ahead, especially on weekends, and it is enforced.
