Kansas City With Kids
Barbecue, fountains, a free streetcar and a train station kids never want to leave.
Nicole Damiano, ASTA Verified Travel Advisor with FG Luxury Travel
Is Kansas City good for kids?
Yes. The big sights are close together, a lot of them are free, and it is one of the easiest cities in the middle of the country to do with little ones.
How many days?
Three days covers Union Station, the zoo, the Nelson-Atkins and the Plaza. Add a fourth for Worlds of Fun or Lawrence.
What is the one thing we cannot miss?
Union Station and Science City. Kids could spend the whole day there, and Crown Center is right across the skywalk.
Do we need a car?
Yes for most trips. The free streetcar covers downtown, Crown Center and the Plaza area, but the zoo, Worlds of Fun and the stadiums need a car.
When should we go?
Spring and fall, April to May or September to October, for comfortable weather and the fountains running.
Two States, One Easy City
Kansas City sits right on the state line, so half the metro is in Missouri and half is in Kansas, and you will cross back and forth without noticing. For families that is the whole appeal. The big sights are close together, a lot of them are free, and you can eat barbecue every single day and nobody will judge you.
Union Station, Crown Center, the Nelson-Atkins and the Plaza all sit along one north to south line, and the free streetcar runs right down it. Base yourself near that line and most of the trip is a short ride or a walk.
Getting Around
Getting around is easy. The streetcar is free and now runs about six miles, from the River Market down to Union Station, past the Plaza area and on to UMKC. For the zoo, Worlds of Fun and the stadiums you will want a car.
Neighborhoods worth basing in
Crown Center
Hotels here connect straight to Crown Center and Union Station through covered skywalks, which is gold in a Kansas City summer or winter. LEGOLAND Discovery, SEA LIFE, Science City and the streetcar are all a walk from your room.
The Country Club Plaza
The Spanish style shopping district from the 1920s, full of fountains, tile and towers. Pretty to walk at night, close to the Nelson-Atkins and Loose Park, and now on the streetcar line.
Overland Park, Kansas
The Kansas side suburbs, with big suite hotels, easy parking and lower prices. Best when you have a car and want space to spread out.
The Raphael Hotel
A classic boutique hotel on the Plaza, a short walk to the fountains and restaurants. The one I would pick for a parents and teens trip.
A Crown Center hotel
The Westin and the Sheraton both connect to Crown Center by skywalk, and the Westin has an indoor waterfall in the lobby the little ones love.
An Overland Park suite
A suite hotel on the Kansas side gives you a separate room for the kids, breakfast and free parking for a lot less.
The Three I Build Every Kansas City Trip Around
Union Station and Science City
A grand 1914 train station that kids treat like a playground. Science City has more than 120 hands on exhibits, there is a planetarium, and the model train gallery is one of the biggest you will see anywhere. Walk across the Link to Crown Center for LEGOLAND Discovery and SEA LIFE and you have a whole day without going outside.
Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium
More than 200 acres and 1,700 animals, with a train, a sky safari ride over the African section, and the newer aquarium with sharks, rays and sea otters. Go early in summer, it gets hot fast.
The Nelson-Atkins and the Shuttlecocks
General admission is free, which still surprises people. Inside it is a world class museum. Outside there are four giant badminton shuttlecocks on the lawn, and kids run between them like it is the best playground in the city. Pair it with the WWI Museum and the tower view if your kids are old enough.
Family Time, Built In: Kansas City With Kids
Kansas City calls itself the City of Fountains, and kids take that personally. Add a free streetcar, a free art museum, a free creative studio and more barbecue than anyone needs, and this is one of the easiest family cities in the country.

PARK & DOWNTIME PICK
Loose Park, a few blocks from the Plaza. A pond with ducks, a big rose garden, room to run and shade trees for the grown ups. It is where I would take kids after a museum morning.

Barbecue, fountains and a lot of free fun
Kansas was home for us until we sold the house in May 2026 and started traveling Europe with the kids, so Kansas City is not a place I read about. It is the city I send families to when they want a real break that does not cost a fortune.
Do Union Station on day one, the zoo early on day two, and save the Nelson-Atkins lawn for a golden hour run around the Shuttlecocks. Eat burnt ends at least once. Then tell me which barbecue place won, because everyone here has a side.
The Day Trip: Lawrence
Forty five minutes west on I-70 is Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas. Walk Massachusetts Street downtown, then go see Allen Fieldhouse, one of the most famous basketball gyms in America. James Naismith, who invented the game, coached here, and his original rules of basketball are on display at the DeBruce Center next door.
Things I Would Tell A Friend Before They Booked
How Many Days
Three days suits Kansas City with kids. One for Union Station and Crown Center, one for the zoo, and one for the Nelson-Atkins and the Plaza.
Day one for Union Station, Science City and Crown Center. Day two for the zoo in the morning and the Plaza fountains at night.
Add the Nelson-Atkins and the WWI Museum, a Royals game in summer, or a day out to Lawrence.
Kansas City pairs well with St. Louis, about four hours east, or a drive out through the Flint Hills on the Kansas side.
