Australia With Kids: How to Plan a Family Trip to Australia
Australia is a long flight from the US but it is one of the most family friendly countries we have planned. English speaking, safe, incredible wildlife, and the outdoors are built into everything. Plan 10 to 14 days with two or three bases. Sydney plus one coast or the Outback is a first trip that works for every age. The seasons are flipped so December is summer and July is winter.
I have been planning Australia trips for families for years now and it is one of those destinations where I get the same reaction every time they come home. They always say they did not expect it to be that good.
The wildlife is what hooks the kids. Kangaroos, koalas, wombats, platypus, whale sharks, sea turtles. You do not have to go to a zoo for any of it (though the zoos are excellent). You just walk outside in the right places.
The flight is real. I am not going to pretend otherwise. But every family I have sent says it was worth every hour in the air.
When to go
Australia on a US school calendar
- 1December through February
Australian summer
Peak season. Hot everywhere, beach weather in Sydney and the Gold Coast, and school holidays in Australia mean crowds at the popular spots. Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks.
- 2March and April
Early autumn
Spring break is one of the best times to visit. The summer crowds thin out, the water is still warm enough to swim, and shoulder season pricing kicks in. Great for the Great Barrier Reef.
- 3May through August
Australian winter
Cool in Sydney and Melbourne but perfect in the tropical north. This is dry season in Cairns, the best time for the reef, and ideal for the Outback if you are adding Uluru. Whale watching season on the east coast.
- 4September through November
Australian spring
Wildflowers in Western Australia, warming up everywhere, and the shoulder season pricing makes it a smart window for a first trip. Stinger season starts in the north around October.
Where to go
Start with Sydney and add a second base
Sydney is where most international flights land. Spend three or four days there, then fly to your second base. Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, the Gold Coast for theme parks and beaches, or Melbourne for food and wildlife are all easy domestic flights.
Sydney
The harbour, Bondi Beach, the ferry to Taronga Zoo, and more fish and chips than the kids can eat. Most international flights land here.
Melbourne
The laneways, the food scene, Phillip Island penguins, and the Great Ocean Road. A different vibe from Sydney and worth the add on.
Cairns
Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Snorkeling, crocodile spotting, and the Skyrail through the canopy.
Gold Coast
Surfers Paradise, Dreamworld, Sea World, and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Easy add on from Brisbane or Sydney.
Brisbane
South Bank beach, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, and the gateway to both the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.
Perth
Rottnest Island and the quokkas, Kings Park, and one of the most underrated beach cities in the world. Add it if you have the time.
Where to sleep
Rooms for a family of 4 or 5
Australians travel with their families constantly so the infrastructure is excellent. Apartments with kitchens are everywhere and they save a fortune on breakfast.
| Option | Sleeps | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Serviced apartment | 4 to 6 | Kitchen, laundry, space. Meriton Suites and Quest are two reliable chains for families |
| Resort | 4 to 6 | Best on the Gold Coast, Cairns and Port Douglas. Look for family suites with pool access |
| Holiday house | 4 to 10 | Great for beach towns and regional areas. Stayz is the Australian version of Vrbo |
| Boutique hotel | 2 to 4 | Sydney and Melbourne have the best options. Ask about adjoining rooms for families |
Getting around
Flights, drives, and what to know
- Most US families fly through Los Angeles, San Francisco or Dallas with one stop. Direct flights from the US go to Sydney and a few to Melbourne and Brisbane
- Domestic flights between cities are short. Sydney to Melbourne is about 90 minutes, Sydney to Cairns is about 3 hours. Jetstar and Virgin Australia have the best prices
- Driving is on the left. Rental cars are straightforward but the distances between cities are enormous. Sydney to Melbourne is about 9 hours by car
- The seasons are flipped. When it is winter in the US it is summer in Australia. Pack accordingly
- The sun is strong, even on cloudy days. SPF 50, hats, and rash guards for the kids at the beach
- Tap water is safe everywhere. Tipping is not expected but rounding up is appreciated
- No visa needed in advance for US citizens. You apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) online before you go. It takes minutes
Before you go
The boring stuff, sorted
“Australia is one of those places where the kids remember the animals more than anything else. Kangaroos on the beach, penguins at sunset, koalas in the trees. You do not have to try hard to make it exciting. The country does the work for you.”

Start planningQuick answers
How many days do you need in Australia with kids?
10 to 14 days for a first trip. Three or four days in Sydney, then fly to a second base like Cairns or the Gold Coast. You can add Melbourne if you have the time.
What is the best age to take kids to Australia?
Any age, but 5 and up is the sweet spot. The flight is long and the best experiences like snorkeling the reef and bush walks are better with kids who have some stamina. Toddlers still love the wildlife sanctuaries and the beaches.
Do US citizens need a visa for Australia?
You need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) which you apply for online before you go. It takes a few minutes, costs about $20 AUD, and is good for up to 3 months per visit over 12 months.
Is Australia expensive for families?
It is comparable to a European trip. Accommodation and domestic flights are the biggest costs. Serviced apartments with kitchens save money on meals, and kids eat free at many pub restaurants.
What is the best time of year to visit Australia with kids?
US spring break (March and April) is excellent. It is early autumn in Australia with warm weather and smaller crowds. Australian winter (June through August) is best for the tropical north and the Great Barrier Reef.
Can kids snorkel the Great Barrier Reef?
Yes. Most reef tours take children from around age 5 or 6. Younger kids can see the reef from glass bottom boats and semi submersibles. Port Douglas and the Whitsundays tend to have calmer water than the outer reef tours from Cairns.
How bad is the jet lag flying to Australia with kids?
It is real. Australia is 14 to 18 hours ahead of the US depending on the coast and time of year. Most families need two to three days to adjust. Fly overnight, land in the morning, and push through to an early bedtime on the first day.
