Nassau With Kids
Pastel streets, a water park the size of a small town, and the clearest water most kids have ever seen.

Is Nassau good for kids?
Yes. Shallow beaches, a huge water park, short distances and food the kids will eat. It is one of the easiest first Caribbean trips.
How many days do you need in Nassau?
Three nights covers Atlantis, a beach day and downtown. Five adds the Exumas.
Can you do Atlantis from a cruise ship?
Yes, with a day pass booked ahead. Passes are limited on cruise days and sell out, so book the week your sailing opens for excursions.
When is the best time to visit Nassau?
December to April is dry and warm. Summer is hot and humid, and hurricane season runs June through November.
Do you need a passport for the Bahamas?
Flying, yes. On a closed loop cruise from the US a birth certificate and ID can work, but I always send families with passports. It makes everything easier if plans change.
The Easy Caribbean, If You Pick Your Days
Nassau is the Bahamas most families meet first, either off a cruise ship for eight hours or from a resort on Paradise Island or Cable Beach. Both work. They are very different trips.
Downtown is small and walkable from the pier. Paradise Island is Atlantis. Cable Beach is Baha Mar and the quieter resorts. Pick one base and use taxis for the rest, because nothing is far.
Getting Around
There is no train and the buses are for locals. Taxis and resort shuttles do the work, and the distances are short.
Neighborhoods worth basing in
Paradise Island
Across the bridge from downtown. Atlantis and its water park, the marina village and a long beach. Busy, big and exactly what the kids pictured.
Cable Beach
West of town. Baha Mar and a string of resorts on a wide beach, calmer than Paradise Island and 15 minutes from the airport.
Downtown and the harbor
Pastel government buildings, the Queen’s Staircase and the cruise pier. Good for a day, not where I put families overnight.
The Cove at Atlantis
The quieter tower at Atlantis with the whole resort and water park a short walk away. Big suites, a calmer pool, and the kids still get the slides.
Grand Hyatt Baha Mar
Cable Beach, a huge pool deck, a kids club and a beach you can swim at. Easier to park a family of five than Atlantis.
Comfort Suites Paradise Island
Across the street from Atlantis with full access to the water park included. The rooms are plain. The pass is the point.
The Three I Build Every Nassau Trip Around
Atlantis Aquaventure
Twenty slides, a mile long river ride and the open air aquarium under the Dig. Give it a full day and get there at opening. Day passes sell out in cruise season.
Blue Lagoon Island
A 30 minute ferry from downtown to a private island with a calm beach, inflatables and sea lion and dolphin programs. The easiest beach day in Nassau with little kids.
Downtown, the Queen’s Staircase and Junkanoo
Bay Street, the Straw Market and the Queen’s Staircase, 66 steps cut into limestone in the 1790s, all a shady walk from the pier. Finish at the Educulture Junkanoo Museum, where kids see the feathered costumes up close and learn why the whole island parades on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Family Time, Built In: Nassau
Nassau is built for families on vacation. The resorts have kids clubs, the beaches are shallow and the food is friendly. Here is what I add.
The Straw Market for a souvenir budget
Ardastra Gardens and the flamingos
Pirates of Nassau museum
A glass bottom boat from the harbor
PARK & DOWNTIME PICK
Junkanoo Beach. Ten minutes on foot from the cruise pier, shallow water, chairs for rent and a snack bar. When the kids need a swim and you need a chair, this is it.

The stop we did off the ship
We came into Nassau on a cruise in 2024. Avilene rode a bike on the beach, the boys stood at the rail looking at Atlantis across the water, and we did CocoCay the next day. Eight hours in port is enough for one big thing, not three.
For families coming for a week, I put them on Cable Beach or Paradise Island and plan one Atlantis day, one boat day and one slow day. That order matters. Atlantis first, while everyone still has the energy.
The Day Trip: The Exumas By Fast Boat
About an hour by fast boat from Nassau, the northern Exuma Cays are the water in every Bahamas photo. Most tours stop to feed the iguanas, snorkel over a reef with nurse sharks, and eat lunch on a sandbar or a private cay, and some add a swim with the pigs. It is a full day and the crossing can be rough, so save it for a week long trip with a flexible morning, not a cruise day.
Things I Would Tell A Friend Before They Booked Nassau
How Many Days
Three nights is a real Nassau trip. Five lets you add the Exumas and a slow day.
One day at Atlantis, one at Blue Lagoon or your resort beach, one for downtown and the Fish Fry.
Add the boat day to the Exuma Cays and a second lazy beach day. The kids will sleep on the plane home.
Nassau is the most common cruise stop in the Caribbean. Plan one thing, not three, and be back on board an hour early.
