Sydney With Kids
What Sydney with kids really looks like, from a family that plans these trips for a living.
Nicole Damiano, ASTA Verified Travel Advisor with FG Luxury Travel
Is Sydney good for kids?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest, sunniest family cities anywhere. Harbour ferries, golden beaches, a koala filled zoo and endless outdoor space, all safe and easygoing. The only catch is the long flight to get there, so build in time to settle.
How many days?
Four to five days for the harbour, the zoo, the beaches and a Blue Mountains day trip.
What is the one thing we cannot miss?
A harbour ferry past the Opera House and a day at Taronga Zoo for the koalas, with a Bondi beach afternoon.
Do we need a car?
No. The trains, buses and ferries cover the city on one Opal card, the airport train is quick, and the center is walkable. The ferries are a highlight, not a chore.
When should we go?
Spring and autumn, September to November and March to May, are warm and pleasant with fewer crowds. Summer, December to February, is hot and ideal for the beach but busy, and remember Christmas falls in summer here. Winters are mild. Pack strong sun protection.
Harbour, Beaches and a Famous Sail
Sydney is one of the great harbour cities of the world, and it is a natural with kids. A dazzling blue harbour crossed by ferries, the famous sails of the Opera House, golden surf beaches, koalas at a hillside zoo, and a coast built for the outdoors. It is safe, sunny and easygoing, the kind of place where a family just slots into an easy rhythm.
The city wraps around its harbour. Circular Quay and The Rocks sit at the heart, by the Opera House and the bridge, with the ferry wharves. Darling Harbour has the family attractions, and the beaches, Bondi and Manly, ring the edges. Base near the harbour or a train line and let the ferries carry you around, they are half the fun.
Getting Around
Getting around is easy and scenic. The trains, buses and, best of all, the ferries all run on one Opal card, and a harbour ferry is a cheap sightseeing cruise in itself. From the airport a train reaches the city in about fifteen minutes. The center and harbour are walkable, so skip the car.
Neighborhoods worth basing in
Circular Quay & The Rocks
The historic heart on the harbour, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, the ferry wharves at Circular Quay, and The Rocks’ cobbled lanes and weekend markets. Central, walkable and spectacular, right where the ferries leave. The classic base for a family.
Darling Harbour
The purpose built family precinct just west of the center, ringed by the SEA LIFE aquarium, the WILD LIFE zoo, the maritime museum and a big waterfront playground. Bright and easy, an excellent base if the kids are the priority.
Bondi & the beaches
The famous eastern beaches, with Bondi’s golden sand and its clifftop coastal walk, plus calmer family beaches nearby. Relaxed, sunny and by the surf, a lovely base if beach days top your list, a short bus or ride from the center.
A harbour view hotel
Sydney’s harbourfront luxury hotels put the Opera House and bridge right outside your window, with pools and polish. The blow the budget treat, with the best view in the city.
A family hotel downtown
The center and Darling Harbour have plenty of comfortable, family friendly hotels near the trains, ferries and attractions. Practical and central, with the harbour a short walk away.
A Darling Harbour apartment
Darling Harbour and the center have apartments and suites that give a family room to spread out, handy for simple meals near the attractions. Book near a ferry wharf or train station.
The Three I Build Every Sydney Trip Around
The Opera House and Harbour Bridge
The harbour is the star, and the best way to meet it is from the water. Ride a ferry across to see the Opera House sails and the great arch of the Harbour Bridge up close, walk out onto the Opera House steps, and let the kids run Circular Quay watching the buskers and boats. Adventurous families and older kids can even climb the bridge. It is Sydney at its most iconic, and endlessly fun for kids.
Taronga Zoo
Take the ferry across the harbour to Taronga Zoo, set on a hillside with the skyline as a backdrop. Kids meet koalas, kangaroos, platypuses and other Australian animals, ride the cable car over the enclosures, and take in one of the best zoo views on earth. The ferry ride there and back is half the joy.
Bondi Beach and the Coastal Walk
Sydney’s beaches are made for families. Famous Bondi has golden sand, gentle areas and a fabulous clifftop coastal walk to Bronte, with rock pools along the way. Across the harbour, Manly, reached by a scenic ferry, has calm harbour beaches and surf. Bring swimmers, watch the flags, and swim between them where the lifeguards patrol.
Family Time, Built In: Sydney With Kids
Sydney overflows with easy family fun. Harbour ferries kids treat as rides, a hilltop zoo full of koalas, golden beaches and rock pools, the SEA LIFE aquarium and WILD LIFE zoo at Darling Harbour, and the huge harbourside Botanic Garden for running. Outdoors, sunshine and water carry the days.

A harbour city that was made for kids
I have spent years planning Australia for families, and Sydney is where I start almost everyone. It is a long flight, so I build in time to settle, and then it delivers, safe, sunny, outdoors and endlessly kid friendly, with the harbour, the beaches and the wildlife all easy to reach. A superb, gentle introduction to Australia.
I steer families to Sydney for several easy days built around the harbour, the beaches and the wildlife, usually as the start of a bigger Australia trip. It is a soft, sunny landing after the long flight, with something for every age.
The Day Trip: The Blue Mountains
Two hours west by train sits the Blue Mountains, a vast eucalyptus wilderness of dramatic cliffs and valleys named for the blue haze the trees give off. See the famous Three Sisters rock formation, ride the steepest railway in the world down into the rainforest at Scenic World, and walk easy trails to waterfalls. A spectacular, easy day out in the Australian bush.
Things I Would Tell A Friend Before They Booked
How Many Days
Four to five days suits Sydney with kids, especially after a long flight. Give the harbour and Opera House a day, Taronga Zoo a day, the beaches a day or two, and the Blue Mountains a day, with time to settle in between.
Start gently with a harbour ferry, the Opera House and The Rocks. Give a day to Taronga Zoo, a day to Bondi and the coastal walk, and a day to Darling Harbour’s aquarium and zoo. Add a Blue Mountains day trip by train.
Add a Blue Mountains day, then a ferry to Manly for its beaches, or a climb of the Harbour Bridge for older kids.
Sydney is the gateway to Australia. From here it is a short flight to Melbourne, the Great Barrier Reef at Cairns, or Uluru, so give Sydney several days and build the rest of the country around it.
