Branson With Kids: Silver Dollar City, Table Rock Lake and the Shows Worth Seeing

Branson is the Ozarks family vacation that has been running for generations, with a theme park in the woods, a lake with a beach, a strip of shows and a Titanic you walk through. It is unabashedly wholesome and kids do not care about the irony. Four days is plenty.

Silver Dollar City

An 1880s themed park in the hills with real craftspeople, glass blowers and blacksmiths, alongside coasters that are among the best in the country. Time Traveler is a spinning coaster for the older kids and Fire in the Hole is the family classic rebuilt. There is a cave under the park with a tour, a big kids’ area, and festivals through the year with the Christmas lights the biggest. Fried food and skillet meals. Two days if you have them.

Water

White Water is the park’s sister water park on the strip. Table Rock Lake is the big clear lake with a state park beach, marinas that rent pontoons and paddleboards, and the Showboat Branson Belle paddle wheeler with a dinner show. Moonshine Beach is the swimming spot. The Shepherd of the Hills fish hatchery on the lake has a trout feeding pond kids love.

Shows

Dolly Parton’s Stampede is a dinner show with horses, races and a pig race, eaten without silverware, and it is the one for families. The Haygoods and the Dutton family shows are music with a lot of energy. Sight and Sound does Bible stories with live animals in an enormous theater. The Amazing Pets show. Book the early shows and sit in the middle.

Titanic and more

The Titanic museum is half a ship on the strip with an interior tour, a sloped deck and an iceberg to touch, and each visitor gets a passenger’s boarding pass to find out at the end if they survived. Kids find it moving. Ripley’s, the wax museum, the Hollywood museum and the Track go kart towers are the rest of the strip. The Branson Scenic Railway runs into the hills.

Where to stay

Cabins on Table Rock Lake for the quiet, Big Cedar Lodge for the splurge with the lake and the Top of the Rock natural history museum and cave, or a resort on the strip with an indoor pool for the shows. Condos at Indian Point near Silver Dollar City.

Practical

The strip has traffic, so use the back roads the locals use. Spring and fall for weather and the Christmas season from November for the lights. Summer is hot and busy but the water parks are open.
