We just got back from our Disney cruise, and I came home with a list.
Not the big stuff. You’ll find the big stuff everywhere. This is the little stuff. The things I tell every family booking their first Disney cruise with me, and the things seasoned Disney cruisers do that most first timers have never heard of.
Like pixie dusting. And fish extenders. And why everyone’s door is covered in magnets 😂
Boarding passFirst Disney cruise
First Disney cruise, the quick version
- First timers can book port adventures, Palo, the spa and the nursery 75 days before sailing, at midnight Eastern.
- After one cruise you join the Castaway Club, and every level books earlier.
- Stateroom doors are metal, so bring door magnets. Since June 3, 2026, decorations have to stay on the door itself.
- A fish extender is a gift exchange organizer that hangs by your door. Pixie dusting is leaving a small surprise for another family.
- Rotational dining moves you to a new themed restaurant every night, and your servers come with you.
- Soda, room service, tacos, soft serve, the kids clubs, the sports deck, movies and the Broadway style shows are included.
- Each adult can carry on one bottle of wine or six beers.
When can first time Disney cruisers book activities?
Port adventures, Palo, the spa and the nursery all open on the same night, at midnight Eastern, and when your night comes depends on how many Disney cruises you’ve done.
So the repeat cruisers have already had their pick by the time your window opens.

Set an alarm for 11:55pm Eastern on day 75 and have your list ready. Palo brunch goes fast. So do the Castaway Cay cabanas and the spa times on sea days.
What are the Disney Castaway Club levels, and how do you get each one?
The Castaway Club is Disney’s loyalty program, and you don’t sign up for anything. Finish one Disney cruise and you’re in. Your level goes up with the number of Disney sailings you’ve completed.

The welcome back gifts got a refresh in 2026 too. Silver members get a Disney Cruise Line backpack, Gold adds a wet dry bag, Platinum adds a water bottle, and Pearl adds a travel pillow and blanket.
The rule nobody tells you
Castaway Club levels are stateroom specific. If Grandma is Platinum and you’re in the room next door on your first cruise, she can only book early for the people in her own stateroom. Put a repeat cruiser in each room if you can.
What time should you get to the cruise port?
When you check in online you choose what time to show up at the terminal. Take the earliest one they’ll give you.
You get on, eat lunch, and the kids clubs usually do an open house that first afternoon so the kids can look around. Then the sail away party on deck, get your ears on for that one. Your bags come later, sometimes not until dinner.
Pack this in your carry on
Swimsuits, sunscreen, medications and a change of clothes. You’ll want the pool before your suitcase shows up.
Which Disney cruise ship should you pick?
There are eight Disney ships sailing now, and they really do feel different, not just in size but in theme, food, and shows. Here is what makes each one special, so you can pick the one that fits your crew.
🚢 Disney Magic (1998)
The original, and still one of my favorites, smaller and cozy. This is the ship that started it all, and it still feels like classic Disney movie magic from the second you walk into the atrium.

Can a family of five fit in one Disney cruise stateroom?
Yes, and this surprises people. A lot of Disney staterooms sleep five. Ours had a queen bed, a sofa that turns into a bed, and a bunk that pulls down from the ceiling with stars painted above it.
The real hero is the split bathroom. Most Disney staterooms have one little room with a toilet and sink and a second one with the tub and shower, so five people can actually get ready at the same time.
There are two sinks too, one in each little bathroom, plus real closet space, double hanging bars, drawers, and the bed lifts up so suitcases slide right underneath. We actually unpacked for the week instead of living out of a suitcase.
Verandah secret
If the people next door are your family, or neighbors you actually like, ask your stateroom host to open the divider between your verandahs. Two balconies become one big one. Both rooms have to agree, and it’s perfect when you’re traveling with grandparents or friends.
And when everyone needs a break, the stateroom TV has Disney movies and cartoons on demand. Endless.
Grown ups, sneak in some time for you. While the kids are at the club, book a spa morning, walk there in your robe with a coffee, and eat breakfast outside at the back of the ship watching the wake. It’s so peaceful out there in the morning.
Disney cruise door magnets and the new 2026 rules
The stateroom doors are metal, so everyone decorates them with magnets. Your last name, your hometown, a Mickey for every kid, a magnet for every ship you’ve sailed. It’s how the kids find their door in a very long hallway, and walking the halls looking at everyone’s doors is half the fun.
New for 2026
Disney changed the rules on June 3, 2026. Decorations have to stay on the door itself now. Nothing on the hallway walls or the ceiling, no tape, no command strips, and no organizers that hang over the door. If something damages the door there’s a $100 fee.
One more thing to know… if you booked a Concierge stateroom on the Dream or the Fantasy, those doors are wood and magnets won’t stick.
Celebrating a birthday on a Disney cruise?
Tell everyone! Decorate the door, and stop by Guest Services. They have special pins for birthdays, anniversaries, lost teeth and other big moments, and the crew will notice them all week.
What is a fish extender on a Disney cruise?
Outside every stateroom there’s a little decorative fish that holds notes from your crew. A fish extender, or FE, is an organizer that hangs from it. Ours was two Mickey baskets.
Families on the same sailing find each other in the Facebook group for their cruise and sign up for an FE exchange. Everyone brings one small gift for every family in the group, and little surprises show up all week. It gives the kids a reason to run to the door every morning!
FE tips
Join your sailing’s Facebook group early, because FE groups fill up months before the cruise. Check the group size before you shop, twelve families means twelve of everything. Keep gifts small, label everything with your stateroom number, and skip anything homemade to eat.
Some families go all out with sewn ones, glitter logos and the family name across the top. We passed this one in the hallway and had to stop.
What is pixie dusting on a Disney cruise?
Pixie dusting is even easier. No group, no sign up.
You leave a small surprise on a stranger’s door. A kid whose door magnet says it’s their birthday. A couple celebrating an anniversary. A family on their very first cruise.
We always build our pixie dust bags right in the stateroom and pass them out all week. Stickers, a little plush, a bracelet or a pin in a sparkly bag. Put it in their fish or hold it on the door with a magnet, and leave a note that says they’ve been pixie dusted ✨

The Disney cruise shows are Broadway style, and phones go away
The evening shows in the main theater are full Broadway style musicals. Depending on your ship that could be Beauty and the Beast, Frozen or Aladdin, and they are SO good. Don’t skip them because you think it’s a kids thing. Some nights there’s a Broadway Stars Series too, with performers from the real Broadway stage.
Two little things first timers don’t expect. There are booster seats for the kids at the theater doors, so little ones can see the stage. And phones stay away during the shows, no photos and no videos. It sounds strict until you realize everyone is watching the show instead of a screen in front of them.
Princess and character meets
The characters are everywhere, and the princesses are the ones the lines form for. Belle, Cinderella, Mulan… this is the part the little girls remember.
Nicole’s tip
Check the Navigator app each morning for meet times, bring the autograph book and a fat pen, and go right when the line opens.
How does pin trading work on a Disney cruise?
Pin trading is a whole thing on Disney ships, and kids love it. Wear a lanyard with a few pins on it, and you can trade with crew members and other guests all week. Ask politely, trade pin for pin, and let the kids do the talking.
Most sailings also have pin trading sessions where everyone brings their lanyards and books. Buy a starter set before you go, it’s way cheaper than onboard, and let each kid pick the one pin they’ll never trade.
Themed sailings: Halloween, Christmas, Pixar and Marvel
If your dates are flexible, a themed sailing adds a whole extra layer to the week.
🎃 Halloween on the High Seas
We sailed during Halloween on the High Seas and it’s one of my favorites. The ship is decorated for fall, the characters come out in costume, and there’s a big deck party, Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party. Everyone dresses up, kids and grown ups. For 2027 it runs on all seven ships from early September through October. The Dream starts September 6 and the Destiny September 10.
🎄 Very Merrytime Cruises
The Christmas version runs November through December, with the ships decorated for the holidays and the characters in their holiday outfits. Holiday weeks fill fast and don’t really go on sale, so book these early.
🧸 Pixar Day at Sea
One sea day turns into Toy Story, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles, Inside Out and Coco. A Toy Story breakfast, Crush’s pool party, Edna Mode’s fashion show and a Pixar Pals deck party. In 2026 it’s on select five night sailings of the Disney Fantasy from Port Canaveral.
🦸 Marvel Day at Sea
Spider-Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Thor, Loki and Black Panther, plus Mickey and Minnie in super hero outfits and a nighttime deck show with fireworks. In 2026 it’s on select four and five night sailings of the Disney Magic from Galveston.
On Halloween night the whole atrium fills up with families in costume, and the characters come out in theirs too. Then everyone heads up on deck for the party.
Pirate Night
Most sailings also have a Pirate Night with a big deck party, and a lot of them end with fireworks at sea. Pack a bandana or a pirate shirt for everyone. Captain Jack might even show up 😂
What is there to do on a Disney cruise besides the pool?
So much. Up top there’s a sports deck with mini golf, ping pong and foosball, and it’s all free. It’s also the easiest way I know to get a tween off a screen.
Then there are the mystery games. The Midship Detective Agency sends you all over the ship solving a case on the screens in the hallways, and on select sailings there’s a Haunted Mansion ghost hunt. Don’t write them off as a kids thing. The adults end up just as hooked.
What is Castaway Cay like?
Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, and a lot of sailings from Florida stop there. Rent bikes and ride the trail, grab a spot on the family beach, and eat lunch at the barbecue, it’s included. Our ears went on at the airport and pretty much stayed on until Castaway Cay 😂
Nicole’s tip
Bring Ziplocs for the cookies at lunch, water shoes, and get off the ship early to grab the best spot on the beach.
What are the Disney cruise kids clubs by age?
This is where the kids disappear to, happily. The clubs are included, they’re open all day into the night, and the counselors are amazing. There’s an open house the first afternoon so everyone can look around before you drop them off.

MagicBands and the kids club band
For Oceaneer, every kid gets a band that checks them in and out of the club, so you always know where they are. You can also use a DisneyBand+ or a MagicBand+ you already own as your room key, to charge things to your room and to link your onboard photos. Order them in your Disney Cruise Line account before you sail, or just use the regular key cards.
Band tip
The kids club band comes with a $25 deposit, so make sure it gets turned back in at the end of the cruise.
What else is there to do on a Disney cruise?
🧠 Trivia
Disney trivia runs all day in the lounges and family spaces. Grab a team, it gets competitive fast.
🐭 Character meet and greets
Mickey and friends are out every single day, not just the princesses. Check the Navigator app for times and places.
🔎 Hidden Mickeys
The ships are full of hidden Mickeys, in the carpets, the railings, the artwork, even the dinner plates. Make it a game and see who spots the most.
🧸 Towel animals
Your stateroom host leaves a new towel animal on the bed at night. The kids will run in to see what it is.
📸 Ship photographers
They are at every character meet and dressy night. Link your photos to your band and look through them before you buy.
🎆 Fireworks at sea
On Pirate Night a lot of sailings end with fireworks over the ocean. Get up on deck early for a good spot.
🍸 Grown up spaces
There’s an adults only pool and lounges for the grown ups while the kids are at the club.
🍷 Palo and Remy
The adults only restaurants are worth a splurge night. Palo brunch on a sea day is a must, and Remy is on some of the ships. Book them at your window.
Nicole’s tip
Fly in the night before you sail. A delayed flight on embarkation day is the one thing you can’t fix, and it takes all the stress out of the morning.
What other Disney cruise activities should you know about?
Every time I think I have covered it all, I remember five more things. Here is what else is happening on the ship that first timers usually have no idea about.
🍹 Mixology class
Adults only, and yes there is a fee. A bartender walks you through making a couple of Disney themed cocktails, and you get to drink your homework. Book it early, it fills up.
👨🍳 Culinary demonstrations
Chefs come out and cook in front of you, sometimes with a tasting at the end. Check the Navigator app each morning for the time and location, it moves around.
🎬 Real movie theater
Not just movies on demand in your room. Every ship has an actual theater showing first run releases and Disney classics, and the popcorn is included.
💆 Senses Spa
The spa is its own little world, adults only in most areas, with a thermal suite, sauna, and treatments. Book your appointment at 75 days out or the good times are gone.
👶 Jack-Jack’s Incredible Diaper Dash
An actual crawling race for the babies onboard, Incredibles themed, and it is one of the funniest things you will watch all week. Ask Guest Services if your sailing has one.
🛍️ Shops onboard
Once you are out at sea the shops open up, duty free perfume and liquor included. Grab a Spirit of Pirates rum or a bottle of something nice for cheaper than at home.
👋 See Ya Real Soon
The last morning has its own little farewell moment, with cast members singing you off the ship. Bring tissues, I mean it.
🖥️ Interactive dining
Some of the rotational restaurants are not just dinner. Animator’s Palate has your own sketch come to life on the walls, and the Marvel and Coco rooms have on screen characters reacting to the room in real time.
Dietary restrictions
Disney can work with allergies, gluten free, dairy free, kosher, halal and more, but tell them ahead of time. Regular allergies need at least 3 days notice before you sail, kosher or halal needs 35 days, and Passover needs 10 weeks. Once onboard, go to the dining room on night one and talk to your server directly, and remind them every single meal even if you already told them once.
How does rotational dining work on a Disney cruise?
This is the best part. Honestly. Instead of one dining room all week, you rotate through three themed restaurants, a different one each night, and your servers move with you. By night three they know who wants the chicken tenders and who wants the ketchup on the side.
Every restaurant is its own little show. On the Dream it’s Animator’s Palate, where the walls come alive and on one night your own drawing shows up on the screens, Enchanted Garden, which changes from day to night while you eat, and Royal Palace, straight out of Cinderella. On the Wonder and the Wish you get Arendelle, a Frozen dinner show with Anna and Elsa. Your rotation is set before you sail, so check your Navigator app for which night is where.
Dinner tips
Pick the main seating if you have little ones, and late seating if you want to catch the early show first. Dress up for Pirate Night and the dressy night, the kids love it. And ask your servers for anything, they will make it happen.

Can you bring alcohol on a Disney cruise?
The 2026 rule
Yes, but it changed on June 3, 2026. Each adult 21 and over can bring one unopened bottle of wine or six beers, and it has to be in your carry on. It stays in your stateroom. If you want your bottle at dinner, the corkage fee is $20. Anything you buy in port gets held and handed back at the end of the cruise.

On the last full day at sea, check the buffet breakfast for them. A must.
🌮 Unlimited tacos
The taco spot up top is included and there is no limit. Go back for seconds, and thirds.
☕ Punch cards
The specialty coffee and ice cream spots have punch cards. Buy 5, get 1 free. It adds up on a long cruise.
🥪 Uncrustables
They’re not on the menu, but ask at dinner or through room service. Lifesaver for picky eaters.
🍽️ Cross order
Loved a dish at another restaurant earlier in the week? Just ask for it. And order all the desserts and share.
🍪 Cookies and milk
Order it before bed. A quiet, cozy room service treat, and it’s included.
🍨 Level up dessert
Bring sprinkles or chocolate syrup for the soft serve, or preorder a sundae from Vanellope’s to your dining room.
🥂 DIY mimosas
Make your one carry on bottle a champagne, then order orange juice from room service in the morning.
🧁 Dessert every night
Order two. Nobody is judging, and the kids will want to try yours anyway.
🍿 Popcorn bucket
Buy the popcorn bucket on day one. Refills are just $2 and you can use it at the movie theater or the shows every night. Great snack, great price.

Be in the atrium just before midnight, lie on your back on the floor and watch what happens above you.

Guest Services has pins for birthdays, anniversaries, lost teeth and other special moments.

A Disney artist walks you through drawing a character. Ours was Captain Hook.
🛏️ Character sheets
Ask your room attendant. They’ll make the kids’ beds up in fun character sheets.
🚿 Gym showers
They’re bigger than the stateroom showers and stocked with nice products. Tall guests, this one’s for you.
🍿 Snack cups
Use the drink station cups as snack holders for fries, chicken tenders or popcorn on the way into the theater.
And look up. Disney is in the details. The stairwells are full of artwork from the films, and the elevator dial has a little Mickey glove pointing at your deck.

Do you tip on a Disney cruise?
Yes. Gratuities are added to your stateroom account automatically, $16 per person per night in a regular stateroom and $27.25 in Concierge. That covers your dining room servers and your stateroom host. You can prepay them before you sail so there’s no surprise at the end.
Bring small bills too, for the porters at the terminal, room service and anyone who goes above and beyond.
A few more first timer tips
🌊 Motion sickness
Pack patches or bands just in case, pick a stateroom in the middle of the ship on a lower deck, and get fresh air on deck if you feel it.
⏰ All aboard time
On port days, check the all aboard time in the Navigator app and set a phone alarm. The ship will not wait.
😴 Plan some downtime
You can’t do everything and that’s okay. Build in a pool afternoon or a nap. The kids will be happier and so will you.
💳 Prepay gratuities
Add them to your booking ahead of time so your onboard bill is only the fun stuff.

First Disney cruise questions, answered
What happens on Pirate Night on a Disney cruise?
It really is one of the most magical nights on the ship. There’s an early show where Mickey and the gang teach everyone how to be a pirate, then at night Captain Jack Sparrow comes out for a second show full of fun and fireworks (which are actually made out of fish food). My son Gavin got pulled into a flash mob during ours, and then Club Pirate took over and everyone danced and danced. Build your night around it.
Do kids get bored on a long Disney cruise?
We just did two weeks on the Disney Dream, Southampton to Fort Lauderdale, nine sea days, all five of us, and the opposite happened. There are so few kids on board on a crossing like that, there’s zero line for the waterslide. My daughter Avilene rode it more times than I could count. My boys had the same friends in the kids club for two weeks straight, and since we move around so much as a family, that meant a lot to them. Nobody opened YouTube the entire trip, and not one of them said they were bored.
Is a Disney cruise worth it for families?
I woke up at midnight to check on my boys and they were in bed watching Disney movies, not playing video games on YouTube. Give it a few days and that shift is real. We’ve had a Broadway star series where two singers who’ve played Disney roles on Broadway did a whole show of songs, we sit at the table and laugh like crazy playing silly games we made up, and honestly I don’t want it to end. It’s not because it’s a vacation, it’s because it becomes this peaceful, old fashioned family routine that’s so hard to hold onto on land.
Is a Disney transatlantic cruise worth it?

Do you need a passport for a Disney cruise?
Yes, you’ll need a passport or a birth certificate, but what’s actually required depends on your specific sailing. Don’t trust Google on this one. Ask your travel advisor before you assume anything, and we’ll check the exact requirements for your ship and itinerary.
Is the wifi good on a Disney cruise?
It was surprisingly good. I ran my business the whole time we were at sea, no problem.
Should I use a travel advisor to book a Disney cruise?
Yes! It’s always a good idea to have someone in your corner who can help with whatever you need. It’s so much better to text me a quick question than to call Disney and sit on hold.
