A Board Game Turned Into a Restaurant in San Diego, and It Works

San Diego adds new restaurants faster than any one person can eat through, but two things opened this year that are actually worth telling a family about instead of just another taco spot.

Candy Land Café opened in July, and yes, it is built around the board game. Big sets, cookie decorating, a rainbow burger on the menu, chocolate fondue for dessert. I would not drive across the county for it, but if you are already downtown and have a kid who is going to remember a themed meal longer than a nice one, this is that kind of stop. Think of it the way you would think of a character breakfast, fun because of what it is, not because the food is the best in the city.

STATION8 opened in August near UC San Diego, a 20,000 square foot food hall with ten vendors under one roof. Food halls solve a real problem for families, which is that one kid wants pizza, one wants a bowl, one wants nothing spicy, and everyone can actually get what they want without three separate stops. If you are staying near La Jolla or UTC, this is a smarter dinner than picking one restaurant and hoping it works for everyone.

There is also a new smoothie stand at Hotel del Coronado, SunLife Organics, set up in a custom Airstream right on Del Beach. If you are spending a beach day at Coronado, that is a lot easier than packing a cooler, and the location means you do not have to leave the sand to get everyone fed.

Here is where I will save you some money. None of these three replace what actually makes San Diego work for a family trip, which is the balance between a beach day, a zoo day and a rest day. New restaurants are a nice add-on to a trip that is already planned well, not a reason to build the trip around them. I still tell every family the same thing I told myself when we brought our three kids here under the age of four, plan fewer big days than you think you can handle, because San Diego rewards a slower pace more than almost anywhere else in California.

My full San Diego family travel guide has the real pacing, the 2026 prices on everything that matters, and where these new spots actually fit into a week there.
