Oceania With Kids. Australia, New Zealand or Fiji First?

The flight is the whole conversation.

Los Angeles to Sydney is about 15 hours. To Auckland, 13. To Fiji, a little under 11. Everything else about planning Oceania with kids sits downstream of that number.

So here is how I sort families.

If it is your first trip that far and the kids are under 10, I say Fiji. It is the shortest flight, the resorts are built for families, the kids clubs are real, and you can do a week and feel like you did it properly. The Mamanucas and the Yasawas are the islands I book most. Bula is not a marketing line. People say it to your kids in the hotel hallway.

If your family likes cities, beaches and animals in the same trip, Australia. Sydney for four nights, then either up to the reef from Cairns or down to Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. Two weeks is the minimum I would fly that far for. Three is better.

If your family drives, hikes and does not care about a pool, New Zealand. Rent a car on the South Island, base in Queenstown and then Wanaka, and let the scenery do the work. The distances are short by American standards and the roads are good. Ten days on the South Island alone is a full trip.

What I would not do is all three in one go with young kids. I get asked for it a lot. Australia plus New Zealand plus Fiji is three countries, two more long flights, and three sets of jet lag. Pick one and add a second only if you have three weeks and teenagers.

The other thing worth knowing. The seasons are flipped. Christmas in Sydney is a beach day. July in Queenstown is ski season. If you are chasing a school break, that changes which country makes sense.

Australia and New Zealand both need a visa or an electronic travel authority for US passports, and both are easy to get online. Fiji does not for stays under four months.
