If you take your kids to just one thing in Hamburg, make it Miniatur Wunderland, and I say that having planned a lot of family trips. It is the largest model railway in the world, and calling it a train set does not begin to cover it.
It is a vast, jaw dropping miniature world spread across huge halls, whole countries recreated in tiny detail, with thousands of moving trains, cars, ships, and planes, a working airport where planes actually take off, and a day and night cycle where the lights come on across tiny cities. There are little scenes hidden everywhere, and kids press buttons to make things happen. Adults are just as hooked as the kids.
It is wildly popular, so book your timed tickets online well ahead, especially on weekends and holidays, or you may not get in at all. Go right at opening to beat the crowds.
Plan two to three hours, more if your kids are train obsessed, and they will be by the end. It is indoors, which makes it the perfect rainy day plan, and Hamburg has plenty of rainy days.
