New York is more doable with kids than nervous first timers fear, and a few strategies make it smooth.
Getting around, the subway is the fast, cheap way everywhere, and kids generally think riding it is an adventure. It has a lot of stairs, so a stroller can be a workout, and a carrier is often easier for little ones. Walking is how you really see the city, so pace it and build in breaks.
For food, New York is a dream and cheap eats are everywhere. A dollar slice of pizza, a street cart pretzel or hot dog, bagels for breakfast, and dumplings in Chinatown. You do not need fancy restaurants to eat well with kids here. Grab and go is often best anyway.
Broadway is worth it if your kids are old enough to sit through a show. There are family friendly musicals made for exactly this, and matinees suit younger kids. Look for discounted tickets rather than paying full price. It can be the highlight of the whole trip.
A few notes. New York is safe in the tourist areas but always busy, so set a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated. And it is a lot of stimulation, so do not over schedule. Three or four days lets you see the highlights without melting down.
