The Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and the Best City Views

A few classic New York sights are worth the effort with kids, and knowing how to do them saves you a miserable day.

The Statue of Liberty is the big one. The cheap secret is the free Staten Island Ferry, which sails right past Lady Liberty with no ticket needed, a great option for younger kids who just want to see her from the water. If you want to actually land on the island and go up in the statue, book the ferry and crown or pedestal tickets weeks ahead, they sell out, and budget most of a day.

Times Square is a sensory overload of lights and screens and costumed characters, and kids either love it or find it a lot. See it once, ideally after dark when it is at its brightest, hold hands tight in the crowd, and do not linger or engage the costumed characters who expect tips.

For the view, kids love going up high. Top of the Rock, the Empire State Building, or the Edge give jaw dropping views over the city. Top of the Rock gets you the shot with the Empire State in it. Book a timed sunset slot for the best of both day and night.
