Start New York With Kids in Central Park

New York with kids can feel overwhelming, so I always tell families to start in Central Park, because it is the city’s giant backyard and it resets everyone.

The park is enormous and full of kid magnets. There is a zoo, a carousel, big rock formations kids scramble up, the model boat pond where you can sail little remote boats, and the Alice in Wonderland statue kids climb all over. Rent bikes, grab a pretzel from a cart, and just let them run. It is free and it is the antidote to the crowded sidewalks.

Right on the park’s edge is the American Museum of Natural History, and this is the one museum I never skip with kids. The dinosaur halls are the best in the world, with a giant T. rex and a titanosaur so long it does not fit in one room. There is a life size blue whale hanging from the ceiling, a planetarium, and halls of gems and animals. Plan the better part of a day. If your kids grew up on the movie set here, they will recognize it.

Both together make an easy, kid paced first day that eases you into the city.
