Dublin has a deep, dramatic history, and there are a couple of spots that bring it alive for kids rather than boring them.
Dublinia is the one made for children. It is a hands on museum about the city’s Viking and medieval past, where kids can try on Viking clothes, handle replicas, smell a medieval street, and climb a tower for a view. It sits right next to Christ Church Cathedral and it is a solid couple of hours, especially for a rainy day.
Dublin Castle is worth a look, more a grand complex than a fairy tale fortress, but the grounds are free to wander and the story goes back to the Vikings.
For book loving families with older kids, Trinity College and the Book of Kells is remarkable, a thousand year old illuminated manuscript and a soaring old library that looks like something from a wizard film. Little kids will not last long, but the courtyard is a nice stroll for everyone.
Ireland is a land of legends, so weave in the stories, Vikings, giants, saints, and kids look at the old stones differently.
