Dublin is an easy, friendly city for families, and I like to start it in Phoenix Park, because it sets the relaxed tone of the whole place.
Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed city parks in Europe, bigger than several famous ones combined, and it is home to a herd of wild fallow deer that wander freely. Kids can spot them grazing, sometimes right up close. It is free, it is huge, and it is a lovely first morning while everyone shakes off the jet lag.
Inside the park is Dublin Zoo, one of the oldest in the world and a really good one, with elephants, big cats, and an African savanna section. It is a reliable full day or half day and a sure thing with kids of any age.
The park also has the president’s residence and a giant monument you can see from across the city, plus long paths for renting bikes.
Dubliners are famously warm and chatty, and you will notice it right away. People will talk to your kids, help you find your way, and generally make you feel looked after. It is one of the easiest places in Europe to travel with children for exactly that reason.
