Amsterdam is a city built on water and bikes, and both are a gift when you are traveling with kids.
Start with a canal cruise. The city is laced with canals lined by tall, narrow, leaning merchant houses, and the easiest way to take it in with kids is from a boat. An hour long tour glides past the highlights while everyone sits, and many boats are family friendly with open tops in good weather. Some companies even do pizza or pancake cruises, which is a smart way to combine dinner and sightseeing with kids.
Then the bikes. Amsterdam has more bikes than people and a whole infrastructure built for them. If your kids are confident riders, this is one of the world’s great biking cities, flat as a pancake with dedicated lanes everywhere. That said, the bike traffic is fast and serious and not very forgiving of wobbly beginners, so know your kids’ skills before you join it. Families with younger kids can rent bikes with child seats.
A word to the wise. Amsterdam has a rowdy adult side in certain districts. Base yourself in a calmer, leafy neighborhood like the Jordaan or near Vondelpark and steer clear of the red light area with kids, especially at night.
