Punta Cana is famous for its beaches and all-inclusive resorts, but if your family has an adventurous streak, the region has a genuinely thrilling side just beyond the resort gates. The best place to find it is Scape Park, an eco adventure park built around one of the area’s natural wonders.
The star is the Hoyo Azul, which translates as the blue hole, a stunning cenote at the foot of a cliff. It is a deep, brilliantly blue freshwater pool fed by underground springs, ringed by lush tropical forest, and you can swim in its cool, clear water, a magical contrast to the warm salty sea. The short walk in through the jungle to reach it is part of the experience.
Around the cenote, the park offers a range of adventures to suit different ages and nerves, ziplines soaring over the greenery, cave pools to explore, walking trails, and encounters with local wildlife and plants. You can pick and choose, doing as much or as little as your kids are up for.
It makes a great change of pace from beach and pool days, and a way to show kids the wilder, greener interior of the island. Wear water shoes and bring a towel and reef safe sunscreen. It is an exciting, active day out that balances beautifully against the lazy beach time that fills the rest of a Punta Cana trip.
