San Juan With Kids: The Easy Caribbean for US Families

For American families, San Juan is the Caribbean made wonderfully easy. Colorful colonial streets, mighty seaside forts, golden beaches, and a genuine tropical rainforest within an hour, all with no passport needed and the US dollar in your pocket. As a former social studies teacher, I love that it blends real history with beach and jungle adventure.

Old San Juan is the heart of the history. Kids wander blue cobblestoned streets to El Morro, a huge six level Spanish fort guarding the harbor, where they can explore tunnels and ramparts while kites fly on the great lawn out front. Then, an hour east, El Yunque delivers the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system, with easy trails to waterfalls you can actually swim beneath. And in between, the beaches of Condado and Isla Verde keep everyone happy.

The setup is simple. Base near a beach for pool and swim time, hop into Old San Juan for the history, and rent a car for a day or two to reach the rainforest. A taxi handles the airport, and the whole trip feels effortless for US travelers.

Come in the drier season, December to April, for the best weather, noting hurricane season runs June to November. Give it four or five days mixing forts, rainforest and beach, and it is one of the richest, easiest island trips with kids.
