Just an hour east of San Juan lies something genuinely special, El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the entire US National Forest system. A day here is the perfect green counterpoint to the beaches and the old city, and it is surprisingly manageable with kids.
The forest is lush, misty and alive, draped in giant ferns and filled with the sweet chirp of the coquí, the tiny tree frog that is the island’s beloved mascot. The best part for families is that many of the trails are short and lead to a reward. Hike to La Mina or Juan Diego falls and you can swim in the cool, clear pool beneath a cascading waterfall, a magical experience for kids after the tropical heat. Climb the Yokahú observation tower, a fairy tale stone lookout, for sweeping views over the green canopy to the sea.
A few practical notes. Bring swimsuits and water shoes for the waterfalls, plus a light rain jacket, since this is a rainforest and quick showers are common. The most popular part of the forest now requires a reservation in advance during busy periods, so check and book ahead. Go with a rental car or an organized tour, and start early to beat the crowds and the afternoon rain.
It is an easy, wonder filled adventure that shows kids a completely different side of Puerto Rico, and swimming under a jungle waterfall is the kind of memory that sticks for life.
