Chennai With Kids: The Cultural Heart of South India

Chennai is the cultural capital of South India, and it is a very different trip from the frenzy of Delhi or Mumbai. This warm, traditional city on the Bay of Bengal is a place of towering temples, classical music and dance, a long sweep of beach, and some of the best vegetarian food on the planet. It is less touristy and more authentic, and for a culturally curious family it is deeply rewarding.

As a former social studies teacher, I love what is on offer here. The heart of it is Mylapore and its Kapaleeshwarar Temple, whose towering gateway is covered in hundreds of brightly painted carved gods that leave kids wide eyed. There is the buzzing, joyful scene of Marina Beach at dusk, the ancient bronzes of the Government Museum, and, just ninety minutes down the coast, the extraordinary ancient stone carvings of Mahabalipuram.

Be honest with yourself about what Chennai is. It is hot, busy and traditional, more cultural immersion than theme park. Come in the cool, dry season from December to February, base somewhere with a pool for the hot afternoons, and get around by the growing metro, autorickshaws and rideshare.

Give it two or three days with a full day at Mahabalipuram, and use it as the gateway to a wider Tamil Nadu or South India journey. For families ready to lean into culture, it is a gem.
