Jakarta With Kids: Indonesia’s Chaotic Gateway

Let me be honest about Jakarta. Indonesia’s capital is a vast, buzzing megacity of gleaming malls, colonial history and truly legendary traffic, and it is not the reason you come to Indonesia. Bali, Yogyakarta and the islands are. But most families pass through Jakarta, and a day or two here has real rewards.

The charm is in the pockets. Kota Tua, the old Dutch town, lets kids pedal colorful old bicycles with matching sun hats around a cobbled colonial square. The towering Monas monument and the National Museum tell the story of the nation. The city’s enormous air conditioned malls are genuine family attractions, with theme parks and aquariums inside. And best of all, two hours away in the cooler hills, Taman Safari lets you drive right up to roaming zebras, elephants and lions.

The keys to surviving Jakarta with kids are simple. Base in the center or the modern south, get around by the Grab app and the new MRT, and brace for the traffic by planning just a couple of stops a day.

Come in the dry season, May to September, give the city a day or two with a Taman Safari day worked in, and then fly on to the real magic of Indonesia. Jakarta is the doorway, and the safari alone makes the stop worthwhile.
