A Day Trip to Tagaytay and Taal Volcano With Kids

When Manila’s heat and traffic start to wear on the family, the classic escape is two hours south to Tagaytay, a ridge top town that is noticeably cooler and looks out over one of the most remarkable sights in the Philippines, Taal Volcano.

Taal is a geographic wonder that fascinates kids once you explain it, an active volcano sitting in the middle of a lake, which itself sits inside a much larger ancient volcanic crater. From the viewpoints and restaurants along the Tagaytay ridge, you look down over this volcano within a lake within a volcano, a genuinely jaw dropping panorama, ideally over a meal or a picnic.

Beyond the view, Tagaytay is set up for a family day out. There is a small hilltop amusement park called Sky Ranch with a giant Ferris wheel that gives even better volcano views, plus gentle rides for younger kids. The cooler mountain air is a treat in itself after the city heat, and the area is dotted with family friendly restaurants and cafes with a view.

Hire a car with a driver for the day to handle the traffic out of the city, go on a clear day for the best views, and bring a light layer, since it really is cooler up on the ridge. It is a refreshing, scenic break that shows kids a completely different, greener side of the region, and the volcano view is unforgettable.
