Let me be straight with you about Manila. It is a sprawling, chaotic, traffic clogged megacity, and it is not the reason you come to the Philippines, the world class beaches and islands are. But most families pass through Manila, and giving it a day or two rewards you with real history, good museums, and some of the warmest, most child loving people you will ever meet.
The historic heart is Intramuros, the old walled city the Spanish built, where Fort Santiago, ancient churches and cobbled streets can be explored, wonderfully, by bamboo bike or colorful pedicab. Nearby, Rizal Park and the excellent National Museum complex bring the country’s story alive, and many of the museums are free. When the heat wins, Manila’s famous mega malls are genuine family attractions, air conditioned worlds with ice rinks and playgrounds, and the Manila Ocean Park adds a fun oceanarium.
The keys to a good Manila visit are simple. Base in the safe, modern, walkable districts of Makati or BGC, get around by the Grab app, and brace for the legendary traffic by planning just a couple of stops a day.
Come in the dry season, December to May, give the city a day or two, then fly out to the real magic, the beaches of Palawan, Boracay, Cebu or Bohol. Manila is the doorway, and a warmer welcome you could not ask for.
