Exploring Historic Intramuros With Kids

The one thing I always tell families not to skip in Manila is Intramuros, the old walled city. Amid the modern chaos of the megacity, this is where centuries of history survive, and there is a genuinely fun way to explore it that kids love.

Intramuros was the fortified heart of Spanish Manila, ringed by thick stone walls. Within them lie Fort Santiago, with its landmark stone gate and peaceful gardens, the beautiful San Agustin Church, and cobbled streets lined with old buildings and museums. Walking it tells the long story of the Philippines, from Spanish colonial rule through the Second World War.

The magic ingredient with kids is how you get around. Rather than trudging in the heat, take a guided tour on a bamboo bike, yes, a bicycle made largely of bamboo, or ride in a colorful pedicab or a horse drawn kalesa. Kids are delighted by the novelty, the guides are wonderful storytellers who make the history come alive, and you cover far more ground in the heat.

Go in the morning before the midday sun, bring hats, water and sun protection, and let the guide weave the tales of galleons, forts and heroes. It turns what could be a dry history lesson into an adventure, and it is the most memorable few hours you will spend in the capital.
