Colorful Islands and Smart Logistics for Venice With Kids

Venice is more than its center, and a couple of practical moves make a family visit far smoother.

Take a boat out to the other islands for a half day. Murano is famous for glassmaking, and you can watch a glassblower turn molten glass into a horse in minutes, which mesmerizes kids. Burano is the one I love most with children, a fishing island where every house is painted a different bright color, block after block of pink, blue, and yellow. It is the most cheerful place in the lagoon and a photographer’s dream. Both are an easy vaporetto ride from the main island.

Now the honest logistics. Venice is hard on wheels. There are steps and bridges everywhere and no cars, so pack light and be ready to carry bags over bridges. A giant suitcase is your enemy here. Strollers are tough too, so a carrier works better for babies.

Venice gets unbearably crowded midday when the cruise and day trip crowds pour in. The trick is to stay overnight, because early mornings and evenings, once the day trippers leave, the city is calm and lovely and yours.

Book gelato breaks often. It is the great motivator.
