St. Mark’s Square With Kids, Pigeons and All

St. Mark’s Square is the heart of Venice and the one spot every family gravitates to, so here is how to make it work with kids.

The square itself is grand and open, and for little kids the main attraction is simple, the pigeons. There are hundreds, and while you are technically not supposed to feed them, kids are thrilled just to run through and scatter them. St. Mark’s Basilica, with its golden domes and glittering mosaics inside, is free to enter, though the line can be long, so go early or book a skip the line slot. Keep the visit short with kids, it is the shimmer of the ceiling that gets them.

The Campanile, the tall bell tower, has an elevator to the top and the best view in Venice, out over the red roofs and the lagoon. Kids love being up high and it is an easy win since you ride up rather than climb.

The Doge’s Palace next door is grand, and older kids like the Bridge of Sighs and the old prison cells you walk through.

A warning. The square floods at high tide, especially in fall and winter, and raised walkways go up across it. Kids find the flooding fascinating, but pack waterproof shoes if you visit then.
