A City With No Cars Is a Delight for Kids in Venice

Venice is a city with no cars, and for kids that fact alone is a delight. Everything moves by boat or on foot, and getting around is half the adventure.

The public water buses, the vaporetti, are how locals get around, and riding the number one line down the Grand Canal is the best cheap tour in the city. Grab a spot at the front or back, and the palaces float by on both sides. A single ticket is pricey, so buy a day pass if you plan to ride a few times.

Then there is the gondola. Yes it is touristy and yes it is expensive, a set price for about half an hour, not per person, so it makes more sense for a family splitting the cost. For kids, gliding down the tiny back canals under little bridges is the storybook Venice moment, and worth doing once.

But my favorite thing to do in Venice with kids is free. Get lost on purpose. Put the map away and wander the maze of alleys and bridges. You will stumble onto empty squares, cats, gelato shops, and quiet canals. Venice is small and safe and ringed by water, so you cannot get truly lost, and the wandering is the whole point.
