You are steps from one of the world’s great ancient civilizations on a Riviera Maya trip, and as a former social studies teacher I would not let a family skip it.
The easy one with kids is Tulum. It is a Maya walled city set on a cliff right above a turquoise beach, small enough to walk in an hour or two, with iguanas sunning on the ruins and a beach at the bottom where you can swim after. Go at opening, before the heat and the crowds. It is the most scenic ruin in the region and the most kid manageable.
The famous one is Chichen Itza, home to the giant stepped pyramid you have seen in every textbook, one of the new seven wonders of the world. It is farther inland, a two hour drive, so it is a long, hot day from the coast. Worth it for older kids who will appreciate it, and best done early with a guide who can tell the stories. You cannot climb the pyramid anymore, but the scale still stuns.
Coba is a third option, less crowded and set in jungle, where you can rent bikes to get around the site.
Bring hats, water, and more patience than usual. The heat is the real challenge, so morning visits win every time.
