Oslo Is a Dream Trip for a Kid Who Loves Vikings

Oslo is a dream for a kid who loves Vikings, and mine do, so this is where I start.

The city’s museums tell the story of a nation of seafarers, and a few of them are made for kids. Look for the Viking ship collection, real thousand year old wooden longships pulled from burial mounds, so well preserved you can see the carving. Standing next to an actual Viking ship does something to a kid who has only seen them in cartoons. Note that the main Viking ship museum has been under a big renovation, so check what is open before you build your day around it.

The Fram Museum is the one that surprises families. The Fram is the actual wooden ship that carried Norwegian explorers to the far ends of the Arctic and Antarctic, and you can climb aboard and walk its decks. There is a room that simulates the polar cold and cracking ice. My kids talked about it for the rest of the trip.

Right nearby is the Kon-Tiki Museum, the raft one explorer sailed across the Pacific to prove a theory. The story alone hooks older kids.

These museums cluster on the Bygdoy peninsula, a short ferry ride across the harbor from the city center, which makes the trip over part of the fun.
