Prague looks like a city out of a storybook, and with kids that works in your favor because the sightseeing feels like an adventure instead of a chore.
Start in the Old Town Square. On the hour, crowds gather at the Astronomical Clock, a six hundred year old medieval clock on the town hall tower, to watch a little mechanical show. Doors open and carved figures of the apostles parade past while a skeleton rings a bell. It runs about forty five seconds and is a little underwhelming if you build it up too much, so I tell families to just happen to be in the square on the hour and enjoy the crowd’s reaction. Climb the tower for a great view over the red roofs.
Charles Bridge is the other must, a grand stone bridge over the river lined with statues, street musicians, and artists. It gets packed midday, so walk it early morning or at dusk when it empties and glows. Kids like counting the statues and watching the buskers.
The whole Old Town is compact and car free in the center, so it is easy walking with kids, all cobblestone lanes and small squares.
Look up. Prague is full of details, gargoyles, towers, painted houses, that turn a walk into a game of I spy.
