When the Rhine or Danube drops too low, the cruise line usually swaps you to a sister ship, buses you around the shallow stretch, or puts you in a hotel for a night, and the trip keeps going. In 2026 it hit hard, and Viking said more than half of its European river cruise days were affected from mid July to mid August.

The Rhine hit a record low at Lobith on September 27, 2026, and disruption was expected into mid October.
Here’s how lines handled it this year.
Viking moved guests by coach to an identical sister ship. Riviera and AmaWaterways rerouted some sailings north into the Netherlands and Belgium. Scenic cancelled some sailings. Some Danube trips swapped a night on board for a hotel in Budapest and a train to Vienna.
The money side is different by line. Riviera pays compensation for each full 24 hours of disruption. Avalon moves you to a sister ship if it lasts beyond 48 hours. AmaWaterways refunds only if the line cancels. Uniworld says water levels don’t make you eligible for a refund.
Travel insurance usually won’t pay for an itinerary change on its own.
If you want the best odds, look at spring sailings, and book through someone who will fight for you if it happens.
Quick answers
Which months have low water on European rivers?
Late summer into fall. In 2026 it ran from mid July into October.
Do you get a refund if a river cruise is changed for low water?
It depends on the line. Riviera compensates per 24 hours of disruption, AmaWaterways refunds only if it cancels, and Uniworld doesn’t refund for water levels.
Does travel insurance cover low water on a river cruise?
Usually not for an itinerary change alone. Read the policy for cruise disruption cover.
Can a river cruise be cancelled because of low water?
Yes. Scenic cancelled some 2026 sailings.
What is a ship swap?
The line moves you by coach to an identical sister ship on the other side of the shallow stretch, so you keep the same cabin type and itinerary.
