Yes, on some lines. AmaWaterways and Tauck take kids from age 4, Avalon from 8, and Emerald and Riviera from 12, while Viking is adults only at 18 and up.

I’ve sailed AmaWaterways, and it’s the line I’d look at first for a family.
Allowed and built for kids are two different things. Most river ships don’t have a kids club, and the day is built around walking tours and long dinners.
The family sailings are where it works.
Uniworld’s Generations sailings have hosts for Junior Cruisers 5 to 12 and Teen Cruisers 13 to 17. Adventures by Disney runs Rhône sailings on AmaWaterways’ AmaKristina. Tauck Bridges runs a France family river cruise, and the bike days are for kids 8 and up.
My sweet spot is 8 and up. Kids who can do a walking tour in the morning and a bike ride in the afternoon.
Summer family dates go first, so book early.
Quick answers
What is the minimum age on AmaWaterways?
Age 4, but they don’t recommend it under 8, and Africa trips are 12 and up.
Can kids go on a Viking river cruise?
No. Viking is adults only, 18 and up, on every ship.
Which river cruises have kids programs?
Uniworld Generations sailings, Adventures by Disney river sailings and Tauck Bridges family departures.
Is a river cruise a good idea with little kids?
It’s hard under 6. There’s no kids club, lots of walking and quiet ships.
Do river cruises give kids a discount?
Usually not. Tauck says there are no child discounts on its France family river cruise, so price it like an adult fare.
