The heart of a family day in Mumbai starts at the Gateway of India and heads out to sea.
The Gateway is a great stone arch on the harbour, crowded and happy and full of boats, the beating heart of the city’s waterfront. From there an hour’s ferry crosses to Elephanta Island and its ancient rock cut caves, where a giant three faced Shiva has been carved into the living stone for fifteen hundred years.
The boat ride, the little train up from the jetty and the cheeky monkeys make it a proper adventure. Go in the morning, bring water, and let the kids feel like explorers.
