The loveliest free thing you will do in Mumbai is walk Marine Drive at night.
It is the long curve of promenade along the bay, and after dark its streetlights arc like a string of pearls. Walk it in the cool of the evening with an ice cream, watch the whole city come out to sit by the sea, and feel Mumbai relax around you.
By day, add the Hanging Gardens on Malabar Hill with their animal shaped hedges, the grand old train station, and a street food crawl through the vada pav and pav bhaji stalls. Drink only sealed bottled water and eat the busy, freshly cooked stalls, and everyone stays well and happy.
