Jamaica is bigger than people expect and the three main resort areas are hours apart on winding roads. Where you stay decides what your week looks like, so this is the decision to get right before you look at a single hotel.
Montego Bay
The airport is here, so transfers are short, which matters after a long flight with small kids. The big family resorts sit along the coast to the east and most have calm, reef protected water. Doctor’s Cave Beach in town is a lovely public beach with a fee, changing rooms and shallow water. This is the practical choice and for a first Jamaica trip with kids under eight it is the one I usually recommend.
Negril
About ninety minutes west, Negril has Seven Mile Beach, which is the best stretch of sand on the island. The water is calm and shallow for a long way out and the sunsets are the ones on the postcards. The vibe is more relaxed, the resorts are smaller, and the cliffs at the West End are where the famous jump spots are. Teens love it. Toddlers love the beach. The drive is the only real cost.
Ocho Rios
Two hours east of the airport on the north coast, Ochi is the excursion capital. Dunn’s River Falls, Mystic Mountain’s bobsled ride, Blue Hole, river tubing and the dolphin cove are all here or close. The beaches are smaller and the cruise ships make the town busy some days. If your kids are between six and fourteen and you want a week of doing things, this is the base.
The south coast
Treasure Beach is quiet, local, and a long way from everything. Black River safaris for crocodiles and YS Falls are the highlights. This suits families who have done the resort thing and want something slower.
Getting between them
Use a licensed transfer company or the resort’s shuttle. The roads are slow and the driving style takes some getting used to. Many families do a split stay, three or four nights in Montego Bay or Ocho Rios for the activities, then the rest in Negril to wind down. That combination gives the best of the island without living in a van.
Quick answer
Under six, Montego Bay. Six to fourteen and active, Ocho Rios. Teens or a beach first family, Negril.
