The day everyone remembers from Hanoi is a couple of hours south, to a landscape people call Ha Long Bay on land.
At Ninh Binh, a woman rows you in a little boat down a still river between towering limestone cliffs and through low caves you duck to enter, past rice fields, temples and grazing water buffalo. It is calm, gorgeous and completely unforgettable, and kids love the boat and the caves.
Go with a small group tour and a private car, spend the day on the water and climbing a viewpoint or two, and be back in Hanoi for the water puppets. It is the perfect gentle counterweight to the city.
