Ha Long Bay looks unreal in photos and is even better in person, two thousand limestone islands rising straight out of an emerald sea, wrapped in mist. The way to do it with kids is an overnight cruise, and it is one of the most magical nights you can give a family.
You sail out among the towering karsts on a wooden junk, kayak into hidden lagoons, climb into vast caves full of stalactites, swim off the boat, and wake up to the islands in the morning light. The boat becomes your hotel, your restaurant and your base, and it does all the work while you soak it in.
You reach it from Hanoi, about two and a half hours by road, and most cruises include the transfer. One or two nights aboard is the grand finale to a Vietnam trip.
