Hanoi is the graceful, thousand year old counterpart to buzzing Saigon, and it charms a family faster than you would expect.
It is a city of tree lined lakes, a tangle of ancient trading lanes where every street once sold one trade, a puppet show performed in water, and a coffee culture that will change how your kids think about coffee. It is smaller and gentler than the south, and it is the gateway to the limestone country of Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay.
You do not drive here. Base in the Old Quarter, cross the streets slowly and steadily holding hands, get around by cheap Grab, and let the lanes and the lake and the food carry you.
