A Water Town Day Trip from Shanghai

An hour from Shanghai’s towers, the old canal water towns are the gentlest, prettiest day trip you can give kids.

Places like Zhujiajiao are the Shanghai of centuries ago, stone bridges arching over green canals, wooden boats poled along the water, old teahouses and lanes. Take a boat ride, eat lunch by the water, and let the kids wander the little bridges and shops.

It is the perfect counterweight to the megacity, ancient and calm after the skyline and the science museum. Go by bus or a tour, spend a slow half day, and be back in the city for the lights over the river.
