Beijing is the grand, imperial heart of China, and it is where the history a kid has read about becomes real.
This is the city of the Forbidden City, the largest palace complex on earth, five hundred years of emperors behind red walls and golden roofs. It is the Temple of Heaven, where locals fly kites around a perfect round hall. And it is the Great Wall, snaking over the green hills an hour away, the wonder every kid wants to climb.
It is big and busy, and with a good plan, the excellent metro and a driver for the wall day, it is one of the most rewarding family trips anywhere. You will need a Chinese visa, so sort that first.
