Climbing the Great Wall With Kids: Go to Mutianyu

The Great Wall is the day everyone comes to Beijing for, and the trick with kids is choosing the right section.

Skip the packed nearest section at Badaling and drive an hour or two to Mutianyu, where the restored wall climbs the green hills with far fewer crowds. A cable car carries you up so little legs are not exhausted before they start, and a toboggan slides you back down, which kids absolutely adore.

Go early, wear real shoes, bring water, and let them run the ramparts of a wonder of the world. Hire a car with a driver for the day, since it is out of the city. It is the memory that tops the whole trip.
