Seals, Tide Pools, and Beaches in San Diego With Kids

The beaches are what make San Diego a dream with kids, and the water is calm and the weather is close to perfect nearly year round.

La Jolla is the spot I send families first. At La Jolla Cove and the Children’s Pool, sea lions and seals haul out right on the sand and rocks, sometimes just feet away, and kids are amazed to see wild ones up close. Keep a respectful distance, they are wild animals, but it is a genuine thrill. The tide pools nearby are full of crabs, anemones, and little fish at low tide, so check the tide chart and go when the water is out.

For easy swimming, Coronado Beach is wide, flat, and gentle, with the grand old Hotel del Coronado as a backdrop. Mission Beach has a boardwalk and an old fashioned amusement park with a wooden roller coaster right on the sand.

Older kids can try a beginner surf lesson or a kayak tour of the La Jolla sea caves, where you paddle past the sea lions and into the cliffs. Both are highlights for the right age.

Bring layers. Mornings can be gray and cool before the sun burns through.
