San Diego might be the single easiest big city in America to visit with kids, and the San Diego Zoo is the reason a lot of families come in the first place.
It is consistently ranked the best zoo in the country, a giant, lush, hilly park with more than three thousand animals, including koalas and elephants. It is big, so wear good shoes, grab a map, and start at the far end, riding the guided bus tour first to get the lay of it, then walking back to what you loved. A full day, easily.
The zoo sits inside Balboa Park, which is a destination all its own. It is one of the largest urban cultural parks in the country, with more than a dozen museums, gorgeous Spanish style architecture, gardens, and open lawns. The Fleet Science Center and the Natural History Museum are the kid winners. Even just wandering the grounds, with the fountains and the free organ concerts, is a lovely afternoon.
Give this pairing at least a full day, maybe a day and a half if your kids love animals and science.
