The heart of old Macau is a short, easy walk that packs in four hundred years of history for kids.
The Ruins of St Paul’s is the front wall of a burned cathedral, standing alone at the top of a grand staircase, and it is the icon of the city. Just below, Senado Square is a wide Portuguese plaza paved in black and white waves, ringed by pastel buildings and lined with egg tart shops.
Walk it in the morning before the heat, climb the old fort behind for the view over the city, and let the kids count the egg tarts along the way. I taught social studies for eight years, and few places show a kid two cultures layered on top of each other like this.
